Chandeliers and glasses of wine grace the night where Selah is standing within the crowd of people from various department of airlines in their office suits and dresses.
“Would you like some wine, Miss?” a man from her back offered her. When she turned to, it was again Eli. Tonight would be their third encounter after last night in the bar with Lilo.
“Yes,” she said, “White, please.”
She sipped the wine and her mind drifted back to how simple but lovely the celebration of Lilo’s secretary’s birthday.
“Can I stay here with you?” he asked her after offering a glass of wine.
“Whatever you like. I was just also invited so I don’t have anyone to talk to.” She replied.
She couldn’t find Lilo in the middle of the crowd so it would be better if she has someone to accompany her in the party.
“That’s good!” he just replied.
She pulled out her phone from her purse as it buzzes. Her heart leaped again when his name lights up on the screen. She excused herself to Eli to answer the call.
“Where are you? Come here at the basement.” He said.
“I’m here inside the building. Why?” she replied.
“Just walked here to the basement. Hurry up!” he ordered her.
“Okay.” She just replied.
She swiftly placed the phone back into the purse and walked directly towards the basement. There, she saw Lilo outside the car waiting for her. But it’s not simply Lilo. Standing before her is a man in a black suit. A white button-down shirt, with hair finely brushed, hands on his pocket and smiling down at her.
Selah just stood there unmoving. Her eyes were a bit surprised seeing him wearing that kind of look and all.
“We’re almost late. Please get inside the car and changed.” He said calmly.
“Wait! Why do I have to?” she asked curiously.
“…because you need to.” He replied.
“…and inside your car? Are you serious?” she asked again.
“My car is tinted, don’t worry.” He replied convincingly.
He opened the door and pushed her inside. There she saw a plain white dress and a pair of silver heels which were perfect combination. She put on the dress and wore the heels. It’s quite comfortable but too formal. After that, she pushed the door of his car and went outside.
“It’s perfectly done for you.” He said as she stood in front of him.
“Let’s go inside.” He said while offering his hand to lead the way.
He hasn’t spoken a word and really resisted to look at her. So, he took time to gaze at her beauty that night when she's looking away from him.
“Aren’t you comfortable?” he asked her directly.
“Quite.” She simply replied.
“You’re beautiful. Try to wear that smile you sometimes shown to me.” He said while smiling to whoever approached them.
Selah cursed under her breath.” It’s not simply as you think!” she said while controlling her voice.
“Calm down. This would end soon.” He said.
As she was about to say one more line to him, a man holding a camera appeared in front of them.
“Can I take a photo for the company’s magazine ma’am and sir?” he asked for permission.
Selah stood still but Lilo held her hand to his arms and smiled at the camera.
“This is great. Thank you.” The camera man said.
Since the camera is connected to the device on her sling bag that is a portable photo printer, the camera man gave to Selah the photo for souvenir. Lilo leaned closer to her to take a look.
“Not so bad for someone who seldom smiles.” He said while almost laughing.
Lilo finally saw glimmers on her eyes again. The entire frown on her face has now faded and turns into a sheepish smile. That moment, he promised to himself that he would do whatever in the world it takes to keep her happy as long as they’re married.
They walked to the crowd when suddenly Lilo was called to give his speech about the event. He walked confidently towards the stage and the spotlight was all given to him as the crowd applauded to him.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.”
With that simple greeting from him, the crowd went wild and applauded to him.
“Tonight, we will be celebrating three important events for Sky Pacific Airlines. First, we will be celebrating the 28th birthday of my secretary, Leigh, who’s been working with me since she graduated in her course. Having such dedicated and organized person in the company is surely a blessing and as well an asset. Leigh, may you continue working with us and never get tired doing your part as my secretary. Happy Birthday and may we bring happiness to you tonight.” Lilo said while looking at her who’s sitting in front of the crowd to take the recognition.
“Next, I would like to congratulate every department for the good feedbacks from our passengers and clients. Now, our statistics of domestic and international flights are getting higher every month.” He continued. The crowd applauded again.
“Lastly, tonight, I have a very important person to introduce to all of you. I won’t do this to give her favor in this company. I want you all to meet my wife, Mrs. Selah Cervantes Saavedra.” He said in front with confidence and slowly the spotlight was leading to her whose cheeks were all reddened and immediately someone pulled her in front to join Lilo to stage.
Selah just followed the lead and when he reached the stage, Lilo reached for her hand while she kept her head down as she walked towards him.
“Come on. Be confident.” He whispered to her.
“You didn’t tell me about this.” She said.
“Now is the right time, I think.” He finally said.
