Dinner was awkward.
I tried my hardest to sit as far away from Austin as possible but to my dismay, he sat right across from me. Every once and a while our gazes would meet and my eyes would dart away quickly. But his eyes lingered longer than they should. Smitty sat to my left and had managed to talk my ear off the entire dinner, but I didn't mind in the slightest only because it rarely gave Austin the opportunity to
talk to me.
"So you and Austin have known each other for a while, huh?" Smitty asked, taking a sip of his wine.
I managed a slight shrug in reply, "I guess you could say that" I chuckled. I
reached into the bread basket to claim the last breadstick when Smitty's hands clumsily collided with mine.
"Sorry, you go ahead," He said softly, a slight blush creeping on to his cheeks as he removed his hand.
"No no, I've already had too many, you should have it," I told him, moving my hands away from the basket as well.
Smitty chuckled and shook his head, "I insist," He said, offering me the bread basket.
I heard an annoyed groan coming from Austin who was clearly irritated by our interaction and a moment later he reached forward and snatched the breadstick out of the basket, "I'll eat it then," he said curtly.
Smitty rolled his eyes and let out a quiet scoff, "Geeze man, snatching food from women like you were raised in a barn," He teased.
Austin waved him off and ignored his comment before turning his attention back to Adam to finish their conversation. I let out a quiet sigh and finished my wine, hoping this torture would be over soon and I'd be able to go home.
Smitty pulled out his phone, "Let me get your number," He said. From the corner of my eye, I could see Austin's head snap towards our direction
with his gaze slightly narrowed at us.
I chuckled as Smitty fumbled over his words, "For the tour you know? In case you need anything? I should get your number," He explained, a grin beginning to tug at his lips.
I couldn't help but laugh at how nervous he seemed and I reached out and took his phone from him, adding myself into his contact list. I glanced up briefly as I finished typing my phone number into his phone to catch Austin's irritated gaze.
I handed Smitty his phone back and smiled at him, "Make sure you text me so I can get your number," I said as Austin shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"Afterparty to finish celebrating at my house!" Austin loudly announced, earning a roar of applause and cheers from the table. He stood up abruptly and his team followed suit, anxious to do whatever it was that Austin demanded. I took my time gathering my things as the others rushed out of the restaurant. I had no intention of attending whatever party Austin was trying to throw and I figured if I was the last one to leave nobody would come looking for me and I'd be
able to escape to the comfort of my apartment unnoticed. I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulder and slid out from behind the table.
To my surprise and annoyance, Austin was waiting at the door for me.
I let out a quiet sigh as I tried to step through the doorway only to have him step in front of me to prevent me from leaving.
"Really?" I asked, annoyed, "This is what we're doing?"
He huffed, "Are you coming to the party?"
"Are you going to be there?"
He furrowed his brow in confusion and let out a quiet chuckle, "Well, yeah, it's my house, so..." He trailed off and finally stepped to the side.
"Then no," I told him curtly, pushing past him to make my exit.
"Regan! Wait!" He called out to me only causing me to roll my eyes so loud I was sure he could hear it.
He grabbed the back of my arm before I had the chance to make it outside to freedom and pulled me back into a secluded corner of the restaurant.
