Adam had kept to himself in the large sitting area at the back of the bus, leaving me to entertain Bobby and Smitty at the small dining table in the front. It was almost an hour into our drive to Phoenix and Austin still refused to answer my texts. Text after unanswered text left me annoyed and in a constant state of agitation which I wasn't able to shake.I decided against bombarding Adam with apologies, but he didn't seem too bothered by the absence of me which only made my irritation with the world around me worse. Nobody ignores me and gets away with it; especially Adam.I excused myself from the table where I sat with Smitty and Bobby who were
currently arguing about whether or not aliens existed and slowly made my way to the back of the bus in hopes of pleading my case to Adam.
Adam was engrossed in his laptop, his fingers going a mile a minute as he edited his photos. The large wrap around couch was littered with his camera bags while the table was covered with various camera equipment. I gently knocked on the wall to get his attention. His head perked up from behind his laptop for just a moment and his eyes met mine. I gave him a weak smile, which he ignored before burying his head back behind the screen.I let out a quiet huffed and rolled my eyes, "Can we talk?" I asked softly. He muttered something under his breath and although I'm sure it was a sarcastic comment that would, on any other day, cause me to hurl insults in his direction, I chose to ignore it. I moved a camera bag off the couch and sat down across from him, shifting uncomfortably in my seat while I waited for him to stop working.I watched him intently as his fingers flew across the keyboard, his face scrunching slightly with concentration. I sat there awkwardly, pursing my lips in annoyance while I continued to wait for him to stop what he was doing.I shifted again in my seat and cleared my throat, "Adam," I said quietly, his eyes finally tearing away from the computer screen to meet mine, "Please."He pursed his lips slightly and let out a quiet sigh, pulling his glasses off his face to rub his eyes in annoyance. He slowly closed his laptop and folded his hands together on the table, rolling his eyes as if I was interrupting his cure for world peace.
"What, Regan?" He asked, a slight hint of annoyance lingering in his tone as the room fell silent.
My mind raced while I debated how to start this conversation and before I could even find a better sentence I blurted out, "We need to talk about me and Austin."
Before I had the chance to finish talking, Adam threw his hands up and shook his head, "I don't want to get in the middle of this lovers spat, I'm over this childish bullshit," He scolded, starting to stand up from his spot.
I reached out and gently grabbed his hand, stopping him from going any further, "Adam, it's so much more than that," I told him, hanging my head slightly, "Please, just let me explain," I pleaded.Adam paused for a moment and let out another sigh, reluctantly taking his seat.
He crossed his arms across his chest and nodded, silently urging me to explain myself.
I cleared my throat and swallowed hard, "Austin and I were best friends in high school-"
"I already knew that," He interrupted.
I furrowed my brow in annoyance and narrowed my eyes slightly, "Are you going to let me finish or not?"
He huffed and leaned back in his chair, holding his hand out as if offering me the floor to speak and nodded, allowing me to continue."Like I was saying," I teased, shaking my head at him, "We were best friends. We did everything together, we had plans to go to college together. Our families were super close, we spent almost every holiday together," I swallowed hard and tried
my hardest not to cry, "Then he left without saying goodbye. And then, a week
later, my dad died," I blurted out finally.Adam's eyes widened slightly and he sat forward in his seat, leaning on his elbows while he listened intently.I sighed, "And I blamed Austin for a long time for it. He hurt me so much I thought I would never forgive him. But, that all changed," I hung my head slightly and let out a quiet sigh, "After all this time I hadn't told him about my dad and this morning he was at the apartment and found a prayer card from his funeral, and that didn't exactly go over well," I managed a sarcastic smile, earning a quiet laugh from Adam."So, that's it really. He hates me now and I can't tell you how sorry I am for almost ruining this for us-for you," I shook my head slightly, irritated that I got Adam wrapped up in this, "I'm really sorry."
