Parties have never been my thing and probably never will be.There were more people than I could count, and while Dre's house was huge, it felt like it could barely hold all of us.I had gone the majority of the evening with Austin by my side but was currently trapped in a conversation with a stranger who had offered me Xanax more than once while Austin had gone to get another beer.Despite my repeated attempts to leave the conversation, he didn't seem to get the
hint.
"My Prius gets more miles to the gallon than anyone here," he said smugly as if it
mattered to me.I raised my eyebrows in feign amusement and nodded slowly, pulling my straw in between my lips to take a sip of my water.
"You and I should get out of here," he mumbled, leaning in slightly, the smell of alcohol on his breath wafting in my direction causing me to crinkle my nose.
I cleared my throat and stumbled on my words, "T-that's alright, I've got, stuff," I rambled, shaking my head as I waved him off.He chuckled and slung his arm around my shoulder, earning a grimace from me and a light groan of disgust. My phone rang loudly from my pocket as he continued to ramble about his incredible Prius and without hesitating, I slipped out from under his arm and pulled out my phone.I feigned a sympathetic smile, "Sorry, have to take this," I blurted out, rushing outside without giving him the chance to answer. The back patio was littered with people, dancing, drinking, smoking. I made it through the crowd before finding an empty table off to the side."Perfect timing," I said into the phone as I brought it to my ear, silently thanking my mom for rescuing me from that dreaded conversation.I took a seat and set my drink down on the table.
My mom laughed, "Why?" She questioned.
"Got trapped at a party by a guy who was not picking up what I was putting down."
"Mom saves the day again!" She beamed, "How's your day been?"
I let out a quiet sigh and shrugged, "Pretty boring. I need to pack tomorrow since we leave Friday. Austin said we'll be in Dallas next week."
She let out an excited cheer, "I can't wait to see you! And Austin, even though you're still mad at him."
I bit my lip, the thoughts of the other night on the dining room table replaying in my head, "Well, we kind of made up and we're okay now."
The other line went silent for just a moment and I could picture perfectly her eyes narrowed slightly at me with the faintest hint of a smirk creeping onto her lips, "I'm glad you two made up."
I couldn't help but smile, thankful my best friend was back in my life and nod in agreement, "Yeah, me too."
"Alright, well I'll let you go. I'll call you tomorrow, same time," She said sweetly.
"Sounds good, love you mom."
"Love you too," She replied before hanging up.
I let out a quiet sigh and stuffed my phone back into my pocket while I surveyed the crowd. Through the mass of people, my eyes fell on Austin as he made his way outside. His smile was wide as he greeted everyone, taking his time to learn their names as he spoke freely. He always looked so at ease when he met new people, a skill I wish I had mastered. His eyes searched the party, I hoped for me, when his gaze landed on me while I sat alone at the secluded table. His lips curled into a smile as he offered me a slight wave, which I returned. He tried to make his way over to me but inevitably would be stopped every few feet or so by someone wanting a picture. He'd happily oblige and when he was done his eyes found their way back to me as he continued in my direction.I couldn't help but smile as he approached the small table and stood at the chair
beside me, "Is this seat taken?" He asked, wiggling his eyebrows slightly.
