"Is that dairy-free?" he asked. You nodded, ringing up.
"Completely vegan." He thanked you with a smile. "Name?" you asked, ready to write it on the cup.
"Oh, Ethan?" You smiled and scribbled it down. You put it down as the receipt came up.
"That's five sixty." His eyebrows raised. "I know, things are a little on the-"
"Boujee-er side, I see." You laughed as he swiped his card. You handed him his receipt before going over to make his drink.
He waited, arms crossed as you snapped the lid on, handing it to him. "Thank you," you said. He returned it with a smile and strutted across the little coffee shop to take a seat. You watched from the corner of your eye to see him open up the laptop he'd brought with him in his hands, turning it on while he sipped on his drink.
You went back to work, turning your focus to the next customer. Ethan left eventually, giving you a wave before going. He was pretty cute, but again- just a customer.
He was back again the next day, ordering the same. "Back again?"
"Definitely worth the five sixty," he said with a laugh. You laughed back, ringing it up. "Remembered my name?" he asked as you scribbled it on the cup without asking.
"Well, yeah," you said with a smile. He met your eye and you smiled. Today, he talked with you while you made his drink.
"You been working here long?" E asked. You laughed.
"We opened last week?" His eyebrows raised.
"Wow, I didn't know that."
"New to the area, maybe?" you asked. He shook his head.
"Nah, I've never been a coffee shop kinda guy- normally just head to a starbucks drive-through, you know?" You nodded.
"So why the change?"
"Working alongside my brother's a pain in the ass sometimes." You laughed, handing him his drink. "So I thought I'd go to a coffee shop for the vibes, you know?" You nodded.
"And why here?"
"I don't know, I drove past and I was like, hm, let's check this out." You nodded.
"Well, thank you." He winked and headed back to his table, the same one from the day prior. You didn't even see him leave this time, too caught up in work.
But he came the next day too.
In fact, he came every day, same time, all week.
And you paid no attention to him. He was just another customer to you.
But to Ethan, you became much more than a barista.

Ethan groaned, booking the flight. "Why just me, Grayson-"
"Because there's literally one ticket available?" Gray asked. "I'm sorry, man."
"How the fuck am I supposed to go without you-"
"Awh, how cute," Gray said with a smile. "She needs you, E."
"I know- why can't you go, though, I have-"
"Because these guys aren't done renovating and you have no idea what's going on to watch over?" E sighed and rolled his eyes. "Get packing, dude."
"New Jersey?" E asked. "Now? Really, fuck."
"What- you had plans for the next week or something?" E grinned.
"Was gonna ask this girl out-"
