Surprise??

CATALINA

I stand by the mirror and look at Ashton lying peacefully asleep on the bed. Half of me wants to wake him up and tell him that we'll get a late start if he doesn't pull himself together, and the other half wants to let him sleep out of common courtesy. I don't think I have enough common courtesy though, because before I can stop myself I'm grabbing a pillow to hit and wake him up with.

Right before I do, as if he sensed me about to attack him with a pillow, he rolls over and buries his head on the throw pillow in the middle of the bed.

"Why do my shoulders hurt so bad? Are you hitting me in my sleep?" He groans.

"No. Not with anything that could actually hurt you." I say as I ease the pillow that I was going to hit him with back on the bed.

"Women are so evil." He yawns and turns around to look at me.

"You know other women?" I gasp.

"Of course not." He laughs. "Didn't even know what a girl was until I met you."

"Okay, good now get up." I smile at him as I throw the covers back.

Every morning at 8  oclock, before the kids go to school, we make sure that they're ready for school and we eat breakfast. Well, they eat breakfast, Ashton and I usually go out to eat something as we're on the way back. Then, Ashton and I both work the day shifts at work so that we're home by the time they're off of school. Also, so that he and I can be alone at night while they're asleep.

"Don't look at my hair, I woke up late." I warn him as I stare at my half up, half down ponytail in the mirror.

I let my normally short and wild curly hair grow out longer than it's ever been. I usually go to the hairdresser because I never learned to do it myself, but yesterday Eric wasted syrup in my hair so I had no choice but to wash it. Now, I look like a lion just like I did ten years ago.

"You look so cute." He chuckles.

"Shut up, lets go."

When we open the door, Christina is standing outside the door with the two ponytails in her hair that I did last night. She smiles at us like she was waiting and grabs Ashton's hand to lead us out of our room. Her tiny hands can barely fit in his but somehow they make it work. The first thing she does is look at my hair and her face lights up with joy that makes my heart tingle.

"Your hair is like mine!" She smiles widely and giggles.

"Where do you think you get it from?" I chuckle.

"I don't know." Christina laughs. "Not you?" She looks at Ashton like she's genuinely confused.

"What? No."

"Oh." She moves to the middle of us so she can grab my hand too. "We're just alike, then?" She smiles at me.

"You are much cooler than me." I grin.

"No way!" She exclaims with a giggle.

"Yes you are."

"Cooler than you too?" She turns to look at Ashton.

"No." He whispers and smiles a her

Christina giggles. "Yes I am. I bet you ten dollars."

"Ten? What do you think I'm rich?" He laughs

Christina is the youngest and by far, the sweetest. She's only five so I expect her to find light in every aspect of the world, but I hope that she never grows out of it. She's golden and I worry that one day this cruel world may take that away from her. I know better than anyone what it can do to you and I just want to shield my children from all the types of pain and hurt that I've experienced; just the thought of them going through any of that shatters my heart.
