[AUGUST'S P.O.V]

Catalina is silent the whole drive to her house, besides her occasionally pointing out the short cuts, I haven't heard much of her voice since we left the school. I wonder what her issue is, I don't know if she has a problem with trust, but it's definitely deeper than her just not liking me.

I wonder if she likes anyone. I've never heard her talk about her mother or anyone for that matter. Almost like she was in this all alone. As if she didn't have anyone, but I'm sure if her mother didn't give her back to the orphanage all those years ago then there must be something about her that she likes.

"It's the grey house over there." She points.

It's kind of odd that she doesn't mind me going to her house. Considering the fact that she has no idea if someone is following her still, and how she has no idea who that person could be.

"Don't tell anyone where I live. I already told my mother and if I die or show up missing you're the first one getting questioned." She makes it very clear as she turns her key in the door.

I only nod my head, in slight confusion but I understand I guess.

The inside of her house is decorated nicely, but something about it feels empty. 'Family' portraits on the wall of just her and a woman with middle length jet black hair, and brown skin. It must just be the two of them. No husband, no younger siblings. All I see plastered around the front room are photos of Catalina since she was younger.

There's a picture of her on the very far side of the mantle piece, as if it shouldn't be up there but it shouldn't be taken down. It's Catalina a few years back, going to her senior prom. Her hair was long, and in bouncy curls that fell right in the middle of her back. Next to her is a guy who's smiling just as wide as she is with her arms wrapped around her waist.

That isn't what shocks me the most though, the fact that she looks genuinely happy appalls me. It doesn't look like she's holding anything back, and her smile reaches her eyes. A real smile at that, something I didn't even think she could do.

All it tells me is that everyone has a method for their madness. She wasn't always the way she is, but now it's the only thing she knows how to be.

"Oh. You're home early today." the same woman from the pictures appears from out of the kitchen. She's wiping her hands with a dish towel.

"Yeah."

"and this is?" she turns her attention towards me.

"He's not my friend, there's no need for an introduction." Catalina walks away towards the stairs and I'm guessing I'm supposed to follow her.

I don't want to be rude to someone in their own home, but what else am I supposed to do? Introduce myself as her friend even though she was telling the truth when she said we weren't.

"Well- uhm. There's food in the kitchen all you have to do is warm it. I left money for take out if you want it." she adds on as Catalina continues to walk away.

"Thank you." she shockingly answers back.

Thankfully, the woman just turns back into the kitchen and I can go upstairs without feelings out of place.

I rush to catch up with the rude host right before she turns into her bedroom and closes the door. Catalina pulls out her notebook and laptop, then she sits next to me so she can get straight to it.

"How am I complex. Even though I know you don't have any good reasoning and you just wanted to call me out."

Actually, I'd like to disagree. I have a reason for everything I do so she's wrong.
