December 28th
Georgetown restaurantJackie sat at the table, the collar of her trenchcoat tucked up and her sunglasses fixed on her face. She was praying that no-one recognised her. The sunglasses hid not only her identity but her tears too.
"Nancy!" Jackie called as she saw Nancy Tuckerman running to her.
"Lisa!" Nancy smiled as she embraced her friend.Jackie was confused. "Who is Lisa?" Jackie asked. Nancy giggled before discreetly whispering: "I thought you didn't want people to recognise you".
Jackie sighed with relief before she and Nancy sat down to lunch. "So Lisa" Nancy hesitated. "What's this whole thing about you and Clint?" Nancy asked. Jackie shrugged.
"No one is supposed to know yet" Jackie explained. Nancy scoffed. "Jackie, the Press saw you and the kids going into his house the day after a truck full of boxes arrived there" Nancy joked. Jackie giggled before she looked around. No one had heard Nancy call Jackie by her proper name.
"But Nancy, I need you to help me" Jackie exclaimed. Nancy listened in while Jackie explained her plan.
After all the media frenzy in Washington, Jackie and Clint had decided to move to New York together to lead a private life. What Jackie had in mind would be: Nancy would pretend to be Caroline and John's mother and Jackie would go disguised as their nanny. That way, they could inspect the apartments together and Jackie wouldn't need to decide over photographs.
"Will it work?" Nancy asked.
Jackie shrugged. "It's worth a try".
They continued eating before Nancy asked one vital question. "Jackie. How do you expect to lead a private life in the most public of cities?".
Jackie once again didn't know. "I'll need to figure that out for myself".
