I awoke to silence. My eyes sluggishly opening to meet the dirt below me. My body felt chained to the floor, the only action I could manage was a tight groan before I could feel my eyelids grow heavy again only to awake a few seconds later to the same scenery. The cycle continued as my body fought the urge to stay awake.
I couldn't even fathom how much time had passed before I sharply inhaled, fully opening my eyes where I was met with an unfamiliar place. I shifted my head off from my arms laid upon the dirt below me.
How long had I'd been out?
I grunted as I propped my arms below me, pushing myself off from the floor. Dirt and gunk clinging onto the outside portion of my arms which I quickly tried to dust it off, however, small particles of sand and dust remained glued onto my skin giving it a dull and filthy look as I tilted my arm around to see the sand particles reflecting off bits of light from the overhead lantern.
I internally sighed, knowing it wasn't going to get any cleaner than that. I didn't have a shower and I could visibly see the small particles of dust drifting through the air as they passed through the ray of yellow light that reached into alleyway from the street.
Seconds passed and a familiar numbness began to seep into the muscles of my forearms as my senses became more aware and body slowly adjusted to my surroundings. I'd fallen asleep with my head propped on top of my arms which I was quickly regretting as they grown heavy and branded with a slight pink hue on then where I'd laid my head. Judging from how sore my arms were, I must've been asleep for hours upon end.
The floor was filthy, and I wasted no time before quickly raised myself off from the floor, dragging my legs out so they were in front of body before leaning my back against the wall, lazily drawing myself until I was propped onto my feet standing by dragging my back against the wall.
I quietly stood, trying to recall the reason why I ended up in this alleyway. The memories slightly fuzzy and my head spinning from moving, but they soon returned.
I received a job earlier that afternoon. An easy, C tier job of stealing merchandise from one of the older, more vulnerable shops in the area, but even though I was already 23, my frame was small and frail, which in turn, that job only ended up with me getting my body mutilated.
As my memories came flooding back, so did a prickling sensation that traveled throughout my body, suffocating and drowning me in a wave of pain. I remembered the beating I received from the owner's son, who happened to be there that day I was supposed to rob his father's store, and even though my whole body was screaming at me to relax and let go of the tension building up, the amount of anger that flooded into my system masked the pain my injuries were giving me.
Those bastards who offered me that job probably knew that he would show up and I would get my ass beat. Judging on how, even though I didn't finish the job, those people never came looking for me or else they probably would've found me by now. Disgusting bastards, what did I do to them do deserve that shit?
My grip on my fist became tighter by the second as my anger rose and could feel the layers of skin on my hands tear, but it slightly helped soothe my shaking from the tears that began to fill the brims of my eyes. How could I be so stupid...so desperate for a job that I didn't even consider the trap I carelessly fell into. As my anger and thoughts overloaded my mind and I felt sniffles escape my mouth before a tear slid down my cheek. I let the slide across my skin as it collected the layers dust and dirt that stained my face. A shaky breath escaped my mouth as I sniffed again. I'd been through so much, so why was I still crying something as small as this?
In the midst of my sobbing, the erupting sound of my stomach quickly caused me to regain some composure. I let my head fall and meet the floor under me as the sound probably loud enough for people outside the alley to hear if they cared enough.
