The Fall of Trost | Part 11

We all kept riding forwards as our gazes were stuck on the direction the blaring sound had come from. Then it hit me, that sound must've came from the direction....of the walls.

It was then a familiar pit sat in my stomach and I quickly turned towards Erwin who was just as in shock as everyone else. Something wasn't right...He knew as well. The direction the gust of wind and the blaring sound had come from--it was definitely from the walls--there wasn't anything else in that direction that could've caused such an explosive noise. It didn't take long for him to quickly put together what'd happened, tightly pulling on the reins of his horse he grabbed a flare of his own before loading it up--shooting off a blue ray of smoke into the sky back in the direction of the walls.

"Soldiers! Retreat towards the walls! Full speed ahead." Erwin commanded, sharply turning his horse around as before taking off at full speed back towards the walls.

As we retreated, my eyes anxiously scanned the horizon awaiting for the peaks of the walls to enter my vision--however, at the same time was still vigilantly paying attention towards the other flares which were being fired. Although this expedition was cut short, we still needed to ensure that we followed protocol. A single green flare was shot by Erwin's squadron in the front and then an array of green flares were shot from all around--showcasing that there were no Titans in our vicinity. We continued riding, our formation now all together as the peaks of the walls now laid in our line of vision. I narrowed my eyes trying to get a better look at the area before I heard a voice call out from behind me.

"Titans! Two 10 meter class and one 7 meter class charging in from the right!"

I quickly turned my head around, seeing as the rear soldiers had already fired three red flares, but just beyond the thick clouds of smoke I quickly spotted the two Titan's rushing towards us at full speed. However, before I could think of a plan to eliminate the threats approaching I heard another voice closer towards the front of the formation. 

"Two more 8 meter class titans to front!"

My eyes now shot towards the front of the formation. Seeing two more red flares shot in the air which only caused more havoc to spread as confusion and fear quickly settled in everyone's minds. I bit my lip slightly, quickly calculating the various options we had at the moment. 

Taking a look at our surroundings, there weren't many trees or houses that we could use to deal with them. Dealing with them would be a big risk, but it was either we were going to be trampled by the ones behind us, or run right into the two in front of us. Not to mention, there were never this many Titans this close to the walls, so even if there was a chance that we somehow outran then, the Garrison likely wouldn't open the gate for us in fear of any Titan's making their way into the city. 

"Y/N. You and I will take out the ones behind us. Oluo, Gunter, Petra, take out the two ahead of us." Levi's voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I turned my gaze towards him before I heard the others quickly respond and break off from the formation. Right, it's best if we take care of it--after all, we are the elite squadron. 

As the others took off--immediately speeding up towards the front of the formation and repelling towards the Titan's, Levi and I stayed behind, slowing down our horses. Once the others were far enough ahead of us we quickly let go of our reins, hopping of our horses before turning towards the Titan's that were no more than a few meters away from us now.
