As I stand by the coffee machine, waiting for my tea to brew, Danny approaches me with his usual warm, welcoming smile.
"Hey, Danny," I say, tucking my blouse back into the side of my skirt after noticing an edge had escaped.
"Hey Mia!" He takes a mug from the cupboard underneath, making himself a cappuccino. "How are things? I heard you got first dibs at one of the new dresses? That's pretty cool!"
"Yeah," I say, taking a pastry from the side and biting into it. "It's great, I feel so lucky."
"Hopefully you'll impress at the ball," Danny laughs, taking his cappuccino from the machine.
I snigger. I'm hoping I can impress too—more than impress, actually—Danny knows all too well how nervous I've been feeling about going.
Back at my desk, I get my head stuck into data spreadsheets and market reporting. But at the sound of my name flying across the room, I find my head jolting to the side.
"Mia, Mia!" Jenny is waving to me frantically, a huge smile decorating her already perfect face.
Standing from my desk, I smile awkwardly, watching as the rest of the team watch me walk away. But Danny is smiling, and he must know that the dress has arrived.
"Your dress is here!" Jenny squeals once I near her, and my thoughts are confirmed.
She's possibly even more excited than I am, and my heart begins to thump fiercely against my chest as she leads me to a back room.
"You'll love it!" She says, unlocking the door and leading me into the empty yet large storage room.
To the back of the room stands a tall clothes rail, and hanging from it a large, white clothing bag with the words 'Saint and City' stitched into the front.
"Go open it!" She shrieks.
I smile nervously, smiling intently as I saunter towards the dress. When I reach the stand, my shaky hands move to the dress, slowly but delicately unzipping the soft, white bag that protects it.
Gradually the beautiful, glimmering burgundy colour is revealed, and my jaw falls open as the full length dress appears in front of my eyes.
"Oh my—" I croak, but I can barely finish my sentence. The dress is even more stunning in the flesh, and I lift my hand to gently stroke my fingertips against the sequinned top. "It's—it's perfect," I whisper.
"Isn't it just!" Jenny says. "Will you be able to get it home okay?"
Oh crap. I hadn't thought about how I'd get it home. Public transport wouldn't work, so I'd need to get a ride somehow. Immediately I think about asking Grayson, but I quickly dismiss that thought; I don't want to boost his already large ego by asking him for a lift, and I know if I do he'll tease me about how I didn't need a lift from him the other night.
