After what feels like hours of chatting, I fill Hailey in with everything I know. She wasn't as surprised as I thought she would be, though nevertheless, she's still taken aback by it all.
"What? So, some kind of drug boss, kinda thing?" Hailey asks, her expression perplexed.
"Yeah," I sigh. "I don't know if there's a name for it." I pause to laugh through my shock—like there's a joke to make out of all of this. "But there's people above him, too."
Everything is so confusing, but quite frankly, I'd rather not know the details.
"And how do you feel about it?" Hailey asks as she chucks clothes into the laundry basket. "Do you still want to make it work?"
My eyes look to the ceiling as I lie on her bed.
Of course I want to make it work—more than ever—but does that make me look like a fool? I'm not sure.
I sigh, and eventually respond. "Yes, Hailey. I love him—I actually think I'm in love with him."
The huge smile that plasters Hailey's face somewhat brightens this dreary, dark night. "That's amazing Mia!" She squeaks, turning to face me. "Then I'm sure you can both make it work."
"I hope so," I say, trying to envisage my future with Grayson. "He said that eventually he'll try and remove himself from it all. But it seems as though that's harder than it sounds."
Hailey studies me for a moment, twirling her fingers around a strand of her long, blonde hair.
"Well," she begins. "If he promises not to involve you, or put you in any danger, then I think you should both at least try—I see the way he looks at you."
I smile weakly, images of Grayson flashing in my mind, making my insides flame. "Yeah, I guess you're right." I lift myself from the bed. "Oh, and one other thing."
"Yeah?"
"This stays between us."
Hailey smiles, and nods in agreement. "I promise."
Sensing that my body needs it's rest, I pad towards the landing, thanking Hailey for her understanding.
"Mia, wait!" She calls, shifting herself to the edge of the bed. Her voice sounds uneasy, and slightly worried.
I turn around, my eyes wide with curiosity. "What?"
"Well," she swallows. "As long as we're telling each other things, then I have something to tell you."
I stand, somewhat shocked in apprehension. "Hailey, what's up?"
She bites on her lip, brushing her feet against the floor.
"Hailey?"
"Fine," she gulps. "I—I sort of, kissed your brother."
My body erupts with shock.
