Our somewhat small house is gradually filling with intoxicated, dressed-up partygoers, everyone eager to grab a drink that Hailey has lined up in plastic cups across the kitchen counter.
She's made vodka lemonade, but added colouring to make it look like blood. I can see that this will end messily—in more ways than one.
Strong dance music booms in the background. As the guests fill into the lounge and garden, I place paper plates full of crisps and sweets onto various countertops.
Hailey and I spent most of the day decorating; adding fake cobwebs to items of furniture, hanging plastic spiders down from the ceiling and sticking up glow in the dark skeletons against the walls. Though I must admit it does look pretty impressive.
"Let me add to that blood, you're not looking scary enough," Hailey shouts, approaching me with a small bottle of fake blood. She dabs at my forehead with a cotton bud. I roll my eyes, laughing at her need to overdo this kind of stuff.
I managed to find myself a cheap cheerleader costume online, and I must admit I'm somewhat proud of how it turned out. I wear a short red skirt with white stripes and a matching vest and pom-poms. Though I doubt I'll be hanging onto those all night. I've tied a red bow into my hair to add to the look, and dabbed a small amount of fake blood down the side of my head. But clearly Hailey isn't impressed at the lack of effect.
"Okay, thank you Hailey," I say, my head tilting as she smudges the fake blood about my face.
Of course she looks way too sexy in her tight fitting Cat Woman costume, not to mention the black stilettos she wears with it.
"You're not scary in the slightest," I tease.
Though I know she's already achieving male attention, and I laugh as more unknown men gawp at her and Holly as they proceed into the garden—some of them trying to disguise their stares under their masks.
Sitting on the sofa, I look about the many guests, all dressed in various horror-themed costumes. I briefly wonder how many people I actually know.
I think maybe five or six.
I've seen Holly, Will and a few others of Hailey's friends, but the rest seem to be strangers to me. I assume once word got out of the party, people just tagged along.
"Hey Mia!"
I turn to see Freddy Krueger pacing towards me, but quickly realise that it's Will. He's really gone all out on the face paint.
"Hey Will!" I boom over the music. Even under the spooky disguise, he stills holds a friendly face.
"Thought you could do with a shot," he says, handing me one of Hailey's home made jelly shots. I dread to think what she's actually put in these.
"Thanks," I laugh. "Here goes nothing!" Simultaneously Will and I down the shot, squirming as the jelly burns our throats.
"Hailey tells me you have a boyfriend," Will shouts when he's done with the shot.
