Chapter XLIV
Rose Rorieare Ruse
As much Scarlett's mere presence got on my nerves, I missed her beyond belief. She'd been away for the past four years in New York and I was finally ready to have her back. Much to my dismay, she was gone before I could blink. I had been with her for less than two months before she was in Venice.
Time really flies by when you're with loved ones.
It had gotten quite lonely in the house without her. I would indulge myself in work in order to avoid my emotions but there was a limit to how much I could swerve my own feelings.
She was my baby sister and I felt like it was my responsibility to ensure her happiness and safety. Calling wasn't enough though, I had to see her face-to-face. It had been way too long, my heart longed to hold her.
I had to meet a client in Greece for the entirety of next week and I was planning to go visit her afterwards.
I was popping by Celesta's house this evening. Her and Taylor were my two bestfriends since high school. They were married now and I couldn't be happier for them.
For the first few years of them dating, I was awkward around them, thinking that I was just third wheeling.
Over the years, they made me feel the most welcome and loved. Any insecurities I had about being a disturbance had dissolved to a great extent.
When Tayler first told me he wanted to go buy an engagement ring for her, I was so excited to know they were finally getting married.
I was there each step of the way, for which I was grateful. It was the one relationship I knew would last. They weren't mates but they loved each other and had been together since a long time.
Here they were, in their late twenties, still together. It's been almost eleven years now, huh. They've been married for five years, moving in together right after college.
When I'm not in the mood to stay alone at my own apartment or my parents condo, I crash at their place.
The wine I bring along is always welcomed.
I had just rung their bell when the pizza delivery guy arrived as well. I paid him just as the door opened.
"How many times do I have to tell you, I want to pay for my own pizzas!" Exclaimed Tayler as I entered, giving him a side hug.
"I got this Taylor, they're mine now." I smiled wickedly.
Hanging my bag on there coat rack, I walked straight to the open kitchen, placing the pizzas on the island table.
The wine bottle was secured in Celesta's hands as I placed a kiss on her cheek.
"Hello beautiful." She said as she smiled goofily at me.
When we were all settled in their couch, I turned to the two, "So...I have a work trip next week."
"Ooo, fancy." Tayler said as he sipped his wine, "Where to?"
"Greece."
"I'm ready, let's go!!!" Clapped Celesta ecstatically.
"This is for work Celesta." I groaned.
"Exactly why we should come along, it'll be more fun!!" She got up from her recliner, placing her glass on the coffee table.
"What are you even going to do?" I asked.
"Okay, so here's the plan." She said as she stood in front of us as if presenting a strategy, "You, do your work stuff there, we'll be on vacay mode - and once you're free we can do some touristy things together, go to some clubs there, see monuments- it'll be crazy!"
Taylor looked over at me, pulling his puppy dog eyes, seeking my approval.
Celesta also moved closer to my face, trying her hardest to make an adorable face.
They were both failing miserably.
"Alright, fine! Fine!" I laughed at there silly faces.
Celesta squeaked as she picked me up in he arms, swirling us around.
"Pose!" Taylor said as he whipped out his camera from thin air.
He was a photographer and over the years, I'd gotten use to him sneakily taking his camera out.
He always kept it at arms length and by now, I was barely ever surprised by it.
"Greece better prepare for the holy trinity, we're about to seize the whole world!" Celesta giggled, drinking directly from the wine bottle.
That night, I slept rather uncomfortably.
I kept having weird dreams and an empty feeling formed in the pit of my stomach.
Was I nervous about my presentation?
No, I knew it would be good, I had been working on it for more than half a year.
What was it then? Was I sick? Or was the universe trying to tell me something?
Thinking that I was just being paranoid, I exhaled, turning over.
Pushing all my thoughts aside, I finally let sleep consume me once and for all.
