We saw this coming yet we could do nothing to prevent it. I was angry. Frustrated rather. I had never in a million years thought that I'd meet my mate right after being crowned.

My family had prepared me for this for so long, I had really started to believe nothing was ever going to hurt me again. I had started to believe I had nothing left to lose anymore. The only way was supposed to be up now.

I couldn't watch Scarlett's family get hurt because of my mistakes and my ties. That was supposed to be my burden to carry, my Karma.

If anything happened to Rose, I don't know what Scarlett would do. How she would react. Considering the nasty hooligans who happen to want to get even with me, if we didn't do something about the same soon enough, I wouldn't be surprised if they killed her off and sent her body as a 'present' to us.

Just as I was about to go out looking for an out for the beast within, my throne room started to fill up with soldiers.

The regiment of men entered the room, their dark auras screaming for immediate attention.

I was sitting on the throne, playing with the cold band of the ring on my wrist. A constant reminder of my past.

I looked at Hercules, the head of the execution team hoping for some good news.

"Sire, the other supernaturals were involved." He said, bowing his head.

My knuckles tightened around the edge of my throne.

"A witch left this box." Said Hercules as his fellow companions dropped a bag near his feet. One of them removed the box from the bag and walked up the stairs to the throne.

Raising my hand at him, I signaled him to continue. He cautiously placed the box near my feet as we all patiently waited for it to open.

A few minutes passed, all of us unmoving.

"It's not for me." I said bitterly.

I knew all to well that the person in charge of all of this was playing games. One that I was forced to participate in. It was well known that if we wanted answers, we'd have to play by their rules.

Or so they thought.

Just as I was about to kick the damn box in frustration, the double doors swung open once again- my little mate standing in the end of the room.

She had a knack for walking into places that would do her no good. She was only asking for trouble.

Compared to everything in this room, the contrast to her persona was evident. Everything was cold, made of stone, the orchestra lifeless, the jewels that dazzled under the moonlight only adding to the edgy look of this cold room.

Her though, she looked so full of life. Full of joy, untouched by the politics of time. Unaware of the ruthless gambles of a life in this hierarchy. Of people hungry for nothing but power, no matter what it cost, me included.

I did not wish this life for her, but I couldn't let her go either.

Ah, it was so appealing to watch her search the whole room for me.

Once her eyes met mine, she walked towards me as if she were in a trance. I didn't look away as she crept closer.

Despite the dropping temperatures in the throne room, her piercing gaze could set my soul ablaze.

She climbed the steps ever so slowly, by sitting on my lap and taking me rather by surprise, wrapping a warm arm around my neck.

She dipped her head near my ear, whispering ever so lightly, "Hiding information about my sister won't do you any good."

With that she turned around and stood in front of the box. She had barely turned to face it when it popped open, smoke encompassing all around it.

I tried to see what was inside it but just like I expected, I couldn't see a thing. Damn the witches!

The others in the room tried to get a look as well but returned to their posts cluelessly.

All this while, Scarlett kept on staring at the box in disbelief.

"What was it?" I asked.

Her head turned to me ever so slightly before she dropped to her knees, holding the box in her hands. They began to shake as she let out a shriek, throwing the box against the closest wall.

It shattered into tiny shards, the wooden pieces flying everywhere.

She turned to me again, this time her rage shinning through her eyes.

"I will kill those bloody bastards." She said in a deadly whisper as she stormed out of the room.
