This was inspired by me reading a sci fi prompt and my depression deciding to kick in at the exact same time.

The small group of space scientists that are left have made a rocket that can travel to deep space, they need astronauts, just one will work, though it's not ideal.

They waight months but no one answered their ads or calls, until fifteen year old Izuku showed up, one of their posted ads in hand.

They want to turn in away at first because he's a literal child, but then he says something that makes them change their minds:

"I'm quirkless." Izuku admitted sadly, "My whole life I've been told i'll never amount to anything. That I'm better off dead and forgotten like I'm supposed to be." He said looking at his feet.

"But I want to be remembered." He challenged a small determined fire lighting lifeless green orbs, "I want to be useful in some way."

"I can't do that here on earth," He continued, "But if you give me the chance I'll do everything I can to make sure this mission works."

"Whatever you want me to do I'll do it." He pleaded, "No matter what it is, no matter what it costs me. I don't have anything to lose anyway."

"If I die during this at least I'll have helped in some small part." He said, "But if I don't do this I'm just going to die here on earth alone, and forgotten."

"You can still turn me away, I'll understand." He said, "But from the looks of things I'm the only one to come forward."

The team realizes they don't have much of a choice. Quirkless people are seen as expendable, replaceable, unimportant by the government even if they don't agree with it, that's the reality of their society.

They accept Izuku's offer and begin his training, slowly learning more and more about him as time goes on.

They realise how little he cares for himself and it breaks their hearts to see this sweet kid talk about himself like he's some broken object that can be thrown away instead of a human being. It breaks them even more that they have to exploit that.

--

Eventually (a year later) Izuku's training is complete and he's being sent off. Its bittersweet for the scientist team, but for Izuku its exhilarating to finally be of some importance.

once he reaches deep space the team stay in contact with him for a few weeks checking in and making sure he's ok and what not.

But that only lasts those short few weeks.

Izuku's ship encounters a meteor storm, causing extensive damage to his ship, and loss of communication to the team.

Izuku after a few hours of trying to get incontact with the team realises that he's completely cut off.

He's not sad or scared. He's completely ready to die, he's been ready for years now.

Applying for the program was a last ditch effort for him to live some kind of life, and even though it was short, he did it.

He'll be remembered, even if it's only by a few people. He lived a life that made him happy for one short year.

Ok I'm fucking sad!

Now this fic could go two ways.

Izuku gets picked up by aliens,

Or

I describe the few months Izuku has in the solitude of space as his oxygen, food, and water supplies slowly dwindle until he dies.
