We were in Carlisle's study as Edward continued to explain to me what the Volturi were.
"The Volturi are a very old, very powerful family. I guess they're the closest thing to royalty my world has" he explained as we looked at the picture of the Volturi.
"Is that Carlisle?" I asked.
"Yeah. He lived with them for a few decades. Described them as very refined. No respect for human life, of course, but a respect for the arts and the sciences, at least. And the law. Above all, the law" he told me.
"Vampires have laws?" I asked curiously.
"Not very many. And only one that's regularly enforced" he told me.
"What is it?" I asked.
"That we keep the existence of our kind a secret. We don't make spectacles of ourselves, and we don't kill conspicuously. Unless, of course, you want to die" he told me.
"What's their take on witches?" I asked him.
"Witches were the ones to create us in the first place, so they see them as something valuable to have" he told me.
I nodded, before looking at the picture again, "I can't even think about someone hurting you" I told him.
"Lily, the only thing that can hurt me is you. And I don't have anything else to be afraid of" he told me.
"That's not true" I told him as I remembered the red head vampire.
"Victoria? She'll come for me one day. Alice will see when she decides, and we'll be ready" he told me.
"And I'll protect you when that day comes" I told him as I put my hand on his cheek and he put his hands on my waist and bringing me closer.
"Lily, you already protect me. You're my only reason to stay alive, if that's what I am. But it's my job to protect you" he told me.
"It's also Danny's job too" I told him and he nodded before looking at the door, "From everyone except my sister" he told me as the door opened.
"It's time! It's time. It's time. It's time!" Alice told me happily as she dragged me towards the living room.
When I got to the top of the steps, I saw all of them their including Danny in a suit.
Alice dragged me down the stairs as Carlisle and Esme came towards me, "Sorry about all this. We tried to rein Alice in" Carlisle told me.
"As if that were even possible" Esme told me before giving me a hug, "Happy birthday, Lily" she added.
"Thanks" I told her with a smile.
She let go as a flash went off, I turned and saw Alice with my camera. "I found it in your bag. You mind?" She asked.
