We opened our home to 18 vampires. Many with gifts of their own. Zafrina had power over the mind. She could make anyone see what she wanted them to.
We stood in the backyard as Zafrina used her ability on Edward. He smiled and looked around in amazement.
I looked at him confused and looked around not seeing what he was seeing.
"If you weren't holding my hand right now, I could swear this is real" he told me.
"I don't see anything" I told him confused as Eleazar came up to us.
"Edward, you didn't tell me your wife was a shield" Eleazar said and Edward looked at me in realization.
"What's a shield?" I asked them.
"The ones I've met are so different" Edward told me.
"It's a defensive talent. It's your vampire ability" Eleazar told me.
"It's why I couldn't read your mind even before. It's why Aro couldn't" Edward told me.
"You have a very powerful gift, making you even more powerful than you were when you were only a witch" Eleazar told me, before Kate grabbed my hand and tried to electrocute me, but I didn't feel anything.
"Oh yeah. She's a shield alright. It would have put her on her ass" Kate said as Carlisle, Tanya, Carmen, and Garrett approached us.
"Or your voltage has been exaggerated" Garrett said.
"Maybe it only works on the weak" Kate said and put her hand, daring him to try and touch it.
He hesitantly put his fingers to her hand, "Garrett, I wouldn't" Carlisle warned.
He ignored Carlisle's warning and touched her hand. He was instantly electrocuted and fell to his knees.
Garrett smiled up at Kate, "You are an amazing woman" he told her and she smiled at him.
Suddenly, we heard something coming. Someone coming. We ran into the woods when we heard growling.
We found Jake and some of the new wolves growling at two vampires, who were sitting on rocks.
"Vladimir, Stefan, you're a long way from home" Carlisle said.
"What are they doing here?" Kate asked.
"We heard the Volturi were moving against you. But that you would not stand alone" the blonde vampire said before he turned his eyes on me and smirked.
"We also heard that you had a powerful witch in your coven. We haven't seen one in centuries" he added and looked me up and down.
Edward glared at him and pushed me behind him as Carlisle moved closer to me.
"We didn't do what we were accused of" Carlisle said, trying to get their attention off of me.
"We do not care what you did, Carlisle" Vladimir said.
"We have been waiting a Millenium for the Italian scum to be challenged" Stefan added.
"It's not our plan to fight the Volturi" Carlisle told him.
"Shame. Aro's witnesses will be so disappointed" Vladimir said.
"They enjoy a good fight" Stefan agreed.
Eleazar stepped towards Carlisle and they shared a look, "Aro's witnesses?" he asked.
"Aww. Still hoping they'll listen?" Vladimir asked.
Later that night, we held a meeting in the house with everyone.
"When Aro wants someone from a coven it's never long before evidence turns up proving that coven committed some crime" Eleazar explained as we all sat in the living room.
"So he's done this before?" I asked him.
"It happens so rarely, I never realized it was a pattern" Eleazar said.
"Apparently he always pardons one person whose thoughts he claims are repentant" Carlisle added.
"This person always has an ability, and always given a place with the guard" Eleazar said.
"This is all about Alice and Lily. He has no one like them. He's seen how powerful Lily was when she was only a witch, he knows she'll be stronger as a vampire" Edward explained as I felt some of the others eyes on me.
"Which is why Alice left" I said.
"Why does he need witnesses?" Danny asked.
"To spread the word that justice has been served. After he slaughters an entire coven" Alistair announced and everyone tensed up.
Amun got up and started walking towards Benjamin and Tia, "Benjamin, Tia, we're leaving" he told them.
"And where will you go? What makes you think they'll be satisfied with Alice and Lily?" Edward asked him.
"What's to stop them from going after Benjamin next? Or Zafrina or Kate or anyone else with a gift? Anyone they want" he added.
I stood up, "Their goal isn't punishment, it's power. It's acquisition" I said as everyone looked at me and I walked over to Edward's side and held his hand.
"One thing that I learned from my people and my parents is to not stop fighting for the people I love and care about and I sure as hell am not going to run from these people who threaten the lives of my children and my family" I added.
"Carlisle might not ask you to fight, but I will. For the sake of our family. But also for yours. And for the way you wanna live" I finished and it was silent for a moment.
Everyone looked at one another before Jake stood up, "The packs will fight. We've never been afraid of vampires" he said.
I gave him a thankful smile and he nodded at me. Danny stood up next, "I'll fight, especially for my sister, nieces, and nephew" he announced.
'Thank you' I told him through our bond.
He gave me a smile, 'I'll always protect you, baby sister and I'll protect my nieces and nephews too' he told me.
The Denalis stood up next, "We will fight" Tanya said.
Garrett stepped up next, "This won't be the first time I fought a king's rule" he said.
"We'll join you" Benjamin told me as he and Tia stood up.
"No" Amun told him.
Benjamin looked at him, "I will do the right thing, Amun. You may do as you please" he told him.
"We will stand with you" Senna told us.
Siobhan stood up along with the Irish Coven, "So will we" she said.
Peter and Charlotte stepped up and gave me nods. The other nomads stepped up as well.
"That didn't take much" Vladimir commented.
"Let's hope it doesn't come to that" Edward told him.
"We'll see" Alistair said before leaving the room.
Everyone showed courage. Though we knew that Aro's army was moving against us. Soon we would face the dark gifts of Jane. And worse, the paralyzing vapor of her brother Alec, who could rob you of sight, sound, and touch.
