Y/n, Oikawa, and Iwaizumi watched as both teams were announced and the players were individually called out to greet the audience. After the initiating coin toss the two teams then lined up. With the loud whistle to signal the start, they bowed to each other out of sportsmanship.
From where she stood, the deafening cheers from Shiratorizawa's side was overwhelming and even though she was technically mostly there for Shiratorizawa in the first place, it annoyed her just a bit too. Karasuno seemed to agree as some of the alumni that had showed up (including Saeko nee-san) shot venomous glares at the preppy crowd on the other half of the stadium.
Putting that aside, the first whistle blew and Daichi served the ball right over to be received by the only first year on Shiratorizawa's starting lineup. Y/n recalled that Semi had called him Goshiki Tsutomu when he introduced her to some of his teammates. The receive went to the setter who unfortunately was not Semi, but instead Shirabu Kenjiro, and the boy called out, "Ushijima-san!"
Asahi, Kageyama, and Tsukishima gathered in a three-person block and jumped as high as they could, yet the ball still made it around and into the waiting arms of Nishinoya. Y/n sighed in relief, ready for the second-year genius libero to pick up the first spike after such good positioning. But she noticed something in Ushiwaka's form at the last half-second.
The ball ricocheted off of her friend's arms and from his knowing gaze, he must have noticed as well.
Y/n turned to Oikawa who was watching, clearly expecting the result. "Oikawa-san, is Ushiwaka left-handed?"
"Yep. Can't believe your te- oh it's just the other guys now- didn't pick up on it. I mean, what else would he be spiking with in all those games? They did watch some of those matches right?"
"Probably, though with cameras it's not always easy to tell."
"Well, the libero over there picked up on it fast, so at least it's good that Tobio's team found out already. Though both of them should have lost. AOBA JOHS-"
His head whipped forward before he could launch into his own cheer for his school, and Iwaizumi with his arm outstretched rolled his eyes at the idiocy his friend went through. Y/n focused on the boys before her, darting to and fro. Her hands grew numb thinking about trying to receive or block one of those heavy spikes shot by the third best ace nationwide.
"Oikawa-san, you must be feeling awful right about now huh? First Tobio in middle school, then Ushijima-san in high school, now both at once." Y/n murmured softly, unaware she was thinking out loud.
"Maybe. As a setter, you can't do anything about a genius in any field, all I can do is provide the best for the individuals that make up a team." Oikawa sighed, startling the half-conscious first-year. "But who cares about high-school nationals amirite? When I go pro I'm gonna win the Olympics, just watch."
Iwaizumi nodded to himself from beside his friend. "I think I'll just go into training, maybe be a coach. I like teaching and if volleyball is what I'm good at, I'll stick with it."
Neither of them planned to go to college, yet the mature vibes that emitted from them felt so strong, as if they were the dependable older brothers Y/n never really had.
"I'm gonna get something to drink, do you two want anything?" Oikawa stood up.
"Whatever you're having is fine!" Y/n replied with her eyes still glued to the match. Iwaizumi stared at her for a second, then just asked for a canned coffee.
"Y/n, why did you leave Miyagi?" Once his best friend left, he asked.
At last, she tore her eyes away to look back at her third year friend. "At the time, I only came to Miyagi for a bit, just because after my mom died I had nowhere else but my aunt's place. I was supposed to go back to Nekoma and stay with Kenma's family, but I wanted to stay with my cousin for at least the first semester. A program for traveling abroad for a couple months in the states was available at Nekoma and that was my goal for studies, so I transferred."
"What about your boyfriend?" Iwaizumi gestured down at the blond right in the front of the net.
"We broke up at a summer training camp. It hurt because it came out of nowhere, but I only stayed for so long because of him so in a way, it's better that we broke up. Besides, Eita is really sweet and—"
"Eita as in Semi Eita??" Iwaizumi gestured to the setter in Shiratorizawa's sidelines. "Isn't he that dude from way back when we went to the mall together, and you said you were his fan?"
"Yeah! He's my boyfriend!" Y/n smiled cluelessly.
"Isn't it a bit strange for a fan to date their idol? Not to mention he's a good few years older than you."
"Iwaizumi-san it's my choice. We're close and that's all that matters-"
"BUT YOU ARE A FREAKING MINOR OKAY?!" Iwaizumi shouted. "Just because he's cool, rich, strong, et cetera doesn't mean it's not creepy. I just don't understand why you would dump someone who obviously cared for you and wasn't over legal age."
"Because.." Y/n said, getting upset. "He broke up with me. That boy... he said I flirted with other guys too much and dumped me out of nowhere. So sorry I don't want to go crawling back to the boy who looks at me like... like... a slut!"
Her words pounded into the young man's ears with the roars of the crowd and sounds of the game below. But Iwaizumi had known that there was no way whatsoever that the player staring up at them from behind his glasses down on the court would have given her up like that.
