This story explores themes of suicide, please skip to the next bolded point if at any point you feel uncomfortable. Thanks guyssss!
"We need to talk."
Y/N shivered at his change of tone despite the thick heat, but nodded as much as her thoughts screamed against it. "I have to get back soon though, can it be quick?"
Kenma looked down at the floor as he fiddles with the hem of his shirt, softly whispering back something. What he said that day Y/N would never know, but when he looked back up into her eyes, with an impenetrable gaze that held all the power in the world, it felt like.
"Y/N," Kenma repeated her name. "When you left for Miyagi I had to tell you something that day. It was something even Kuroo didn't know and he can't ever know."
"Kenma you're scaring me now-" The setter hushed her before she could even finish and dropped his tone.
"Your mother's death." Y/N felt her heart quiver in her chest at those words. The words she had pushed behind her for over a year had come back. It felt haunting, like a ghost that never left your side even after you forgot about it. "I don't think it was a suicide."
"Kenma." Y/N's tone was cold.
He continued anyway. "Think about it though. That note, it didn't line up with the things she'd told you in the past and-"
"KENMA!" Y/N screamed for the first time since she had last seen her mother. The boy froze, making his resemblance to a cat more and more noticeable. It was funny how that was what she was thinking when her mouth moved on it's own. "I don't care anymore. I finally got over it, and I intend to stay that way. My mother was a coward who only stayed alive because she was in denial. There's nothing more to it."
Start here if you skipped the above passage!
With that Y/N stormed past her best friend, and all the way back to the gym where Karasuno was coming back from their uphill sprints punishment. Kei walked over to her briskly despite having run really hard and cocked his head to the side, in a question without words.
She understood and nodded, holding up the compact device in her hands. He smiled and ruffled her hair teasingly, to which Y/N tried pushing his hand away, but Kei just laughed at her feeble attempts, making Y/N huff and walk over to where Yamaguchi and Hinata were watching Shinzen and Ubugawa still play their first sets.
After one of the players from Ubugawa delivered a serve so powerful that it looked like the poor receiver on Shinzen's side would lose their arms, they readied themselves and completely blocked the spiker who had leapt high, though not enough.
"Whoa! Shut out!" All three exclaimed in a sort of awe, and Ukai who was watching with amusement came up beside them.
"Serve and Block. A technique used by breaking up their defense with a killer serve, then once their attack is limited, finish them off with a block!" The alumni explained, rather proud. "It's the ideal attack right after a service ace."
Hinata made that WHOOOAAAAA sound he did whenever he learned something new in volleyball and turned to Y/N and Tadashi both. "Let's all try that together after practice!"
Y/N laughed and patted him on the shoulder. "Shoyo, let's get your quick to be better before you start leaping on to other things. But I could work on my serve..."
"Y/N-chan let me practice with you later! I need to work on my jump-float and I want to be better at blocking." Tadashi chimed in.
Suga and Daichi came up from behind and the vice-captain said with his angelic grin, "Let's beat these guys first, 'kay?"
The matches continued for the rest of the day, with Karasuno losing most, to put it lightly. It stretched out until they saw the sky dark and full of stars. The moon happened to be large and full, and remembering a while ago when Tobio had said he played the moon in his elementary school play, Y/N snickered at imagining his grumpy face in the center of the night sky.
Kei was tired, there wasn't any in between. Kei was also very much missing Y/N. But she had disappeared off to play with Tadashi like they'd promised earlier, and he started regretting saying no to practice. Anyways, point is he was now tired and lonely.
So he decided to go take a bath, then sleep. Tsukishima was heading back to the building, when he heard a deep voice calling out. He turned only to see Nekoma's and Fukurodani's captains staring straight at him. Isn't that rooster-head dude Y/N's friend...? Dang. Still thinking about her, huh?
"Jump some blocks for us, will ya?" Nekoma's captain, Kuroo, gestured to him.
"Actually, I'm done for the night. If you'll excuse me~" Kei spoke in a formal manner but the older boys still stared in shock that he turned down their aMaZiNg offer.
Bokuto, the one in blue, whined. "But it's meaningless to practice spiking without blockers! Pleaseeeee???"
"Why me? What about anyone on Fukurodani?"
Fukurodani's setter, Akaashi, popped out from behind and spoke with his even tone, "Bokuto-san's spike practice never ends so everyone hurries to escape from it."
His comment made Bokuto whine out an "A K A A S H I I I I!!!" But he patted the spiker on the head and he looked better already.
"And I'm busy ki- I mean training- this guy." Kuroo gestured to a tall figure who was sprawled on the floor, clearly exhausted.
Then the creature talked. "I'm telling you, I'll jump those blocks for you guys-"
"Shut up!" The captain said, and then dragged the corpse to the other side for him to practice receives. Darn receives. Kuroo came back, and then pointed to Bokuto. "You know, this guy is one of the five best spikers in the nation. He'd be good practice for you"
To emphasize this, the ace stood up taller, only to hear Akaashi say as indifferent as before, "He probably just misses the top three."
Kuroo placed his hand on his friend's back and smiled with a "Don't mind." While Bokuto and Akaashi argued, Kuroo looked back with a mocking glare that rivaled Tsukishima's own. "You're a middle blocker, right? Shouldn't you try practicing your blocks a little more? You are my Y/N's boyfriend, right?"
A tick mark appeared on Tsukishima's forehead and his only thought was, The audacity of this bitch. Without another word, he walked inside. He hadn't even noticed Bokuto whisper to Akaashi, "Ennoshita-chan is taken??? Too bad, bro."
"Too bad indeed, Bokuto-san."
