There will be a TW in this so please if at any point my writing makes you uncomfortable, skip that part. I'm so sorry if this offends anyone but it is a crucial point in the story and it brings up the point of why Y/N is like she is. Again, skip parts that trigger anything. Thank you so much.
At long last, the week had come near to it's end, and it was the night before the last day of the Karasuno Boys volleyball club's Golden week training camp. (that's a mouthful) The team had grown closer and closer over the past couple days and Y/N was content. Being able to be there for her team felt good, and the improvements an refinements of the skills they honed were visible to everyone.
After recovering from the whole initial shock that Y/N and Kei were dating, in Nishinoya's and Tanaka's cases more like Tsukishima had gotten into a relationship before them, the couple was flooded with support from the entire team.
But in Tsukishima's mind, he felt unease. It may have just been that he really didn't like how Y/N somehow got more attention even after she said she was in a relationship. He couldn't place a finger on what it was, but to Kei, it was a nasty feeling that almost always ended in a wave of guilt.
He trusted Y/N, of course, but not those around her. Both Y/N and Kei knew that they weren't yet done with Suzuki, as that interfering idiot had tried to use Tsukishima's embarrassment to bring out his Tsun side, pushing Y/N away.
Little did she know that she messed with the wrong team.
It was late, and Y/N couldn't sleep. Just a couple hours previous, Hinata had asked what Chikara meant when he said he'd run away before. Bringing up that story left a pang in the girl's heart. She remembered what had happened that same time, part of the reason Chikara had quit volleyball.
(Here's Y/N's involvement with Chikara's quitting. There will be trauma involved and please skip if suicide is one of your triggers.)
Tokyo, one year ago:
A middle school Y/N wondered what high school she should apply to as she walked her way home. She would probably try for Nekoma High School, because Testsurou and Kenma were both there, and she didn't really have any other friends. She could also help manage the team there and work on sets with her senpai.
Wondering on how Chikara and his team were doing, Y/N decided to go check when she got home over an online call.
But upon nearing her usually welcoming home, she felt something was off. A dark feeling kneaded itself in Y/N's stomach as she walked down the pathway and into her house.
She swung the door open and screamed when she saw her mother hanging from the ceiling fan, morbidly turning with the blades, attached by the neck with a noose. The girl shook, unmoving. Her eyes darted across the room as Y/N soon sprinted through every corner for a note, some reason why she'd do this to herself.
Y/N looked back at the body. Her face was streaked with dirt and trails ran from her eyes, meaning she had cried before she had done it. In her closed fist, a piece of paper stuck out. She ran over at once and pried the note from her mother's hands.
Feeling the coldness of them, Y/N couldn't see anymore. Her eyes had filled with tears, blurring her vision. She wiped them furiously, opening the note to see.
It read:
My dearest Y/N. You know I love you more than anything in the world. But your life would be better off this way. Your father had hurt me and left when you were born. He plunged us into extreme debt, and working this hard to clean up his mistakes, I can't do it anymore.
Go live with your aunt and Chikara-kun in Miyagi, they can take care of you. Whatever little money I have left is in your possession now. When you read this, call up Chikara at once. Say goodbye to sweet Tetsurou-kun and Kenma-kun. I'm in a better place now.
Y/N's remorse and grief now burned with rage. How could her mother do this?! After all the things Y/N had done to help her burden, she just gives up? On her daughter, who loved her more than she loved herself? She grabbed her phone from her discarded bag at the entrance.
Punching Chikara's contact information she let the phone dial, furiously hoping he'd pick up.
"Ah, Y/N. Do you need anything right now? I'm a bit tired..." His voice lulled with a dull ache across the line. Y/N couldn't hold it back.
"Ch-chikara! There's been an emergency at home, I need your mom to drive me to your place. I'll pack all my stuff, I need to move in."
On the other end, Chikara attentively jerked up. "Y/N what's wrong? Tell me! Where's auntie?"
She cried. "S-she's dead!" Her story flowed from the second she got home up until that moment. Chikara, who had also loved Y/N's mom as a guardian figure started to cry as well.
Soon he handed the phone to his mom and explained what was happening. The whole thing felt like a blur after that, Y/N called the police, she left for Chikara's house at once, but before she had called Tetsurou and Kenma to explain the entire situation. They had ran to her house and given her a final hug, then that was the last she ever saw of them.
Y/N had gone into a depression as she had not finished her last term of school in Tokyo, she had just stayed at Chikara's house, barely moving, speaking, eating. Kozume Kenma in Tokyo had missed her so much, more than he let on. He wanted to get rid of playing volleyball, it had reminded him with each set of the ones Y/N would do.
His elder acquaintance, Kuroo Testurou, had told him that it would be fine. They grieved together, but Kenma had continued, due to Tetsurou knowing that volleyball was a way of closure at the time.
Chikara had been put through extra stress with HIS volleyball club, and seeing Y/N's blank face everyday along with coping with his own heartbreak finally made the strong young man crack. He stopped going to practices, and Y/N's entire life was surrounded by a numbing dullness.
But seeing Chikara's growing agony, he insisted on caring for Y/N when he couldn't even care for himself, brought Y/N back to reality.
One fine day, just as he was about to leave for school, Y/N spoke for the first time in around a month. "E-ennoshita Chikara...." She whispered.
Her cousin stopped at once and ran over to her. "Oh my god, Y/N you're talking!"
She nodded once, then continued. "Stop being a dumbass and go play volleyball."
Heh? He thought. Maybe I misheard...?
"What do you mean?" He stared at her, confused.
"I mean," She was now glaring. "Just because my mom was too weak and gave up on her own daughter doesn't mean you should leave volleyball. It makes you happy and we all need that. So shut your moping and go."
He softly hugged her. "Thank you"
Flashback ended.
A/N Sorry again if this caused a trigger, this hopefully provides some backstory. Y/N now basically hates her mother for losing what was dear to her and grew to not trust anyone. Chikara cared too much for his younger cousin, thus leading to separation from his own life. Kenma had become less patient, the stress of his seniors bossing him around as a first year had only added to his stress, and he almost quit.
I don't even know why I chose to write like this, but it ended up extremely sad and with a dull theme. The match will probably be updated next and as a double. Sorry, I haven't worked on it much yet but i'll try to soon!
Yours,
Saishimi 💜
