Chapter 33 Nothing Left

Katniss POV

Peeta and I rush to the hospital and up to Rye's room where the doctor is waiting for us. He turns and smiles when he see's us.

"Ahh...Katniss and Peeta." he says. We stop and catch our breath.

"How is he?! Whats wrong?!" I ask frantically. He chuckles and shakes his head.

"Nothing is wrong with Rye. He woke up." he says. I smile and look to Peeta who has tears in his eyes. I pull him into a tight hug. "You can see him if you want. We haven't spoken much aside the basic tests." I nod and he steps out of the way, we walk in and see him sitting in bed, looking out the large window. I break into tears and run over to him, hugging him tightly as I feel Peeta's arms around us.

"Who are you?" he asks. I pull back and look at me confused.

"What you mean? I'm your mother." I say. He looks at me for a while but shakes his head.

"No...I don't know you." he says. I look up to Peeta who looks as worried as I do. 

"What about me?" Peeta asks gripping my shoulders lightly.

"Umm..errr...." he looks down to think. "I don't know either." he says just as the doctor walks in.

"Whats going on?" he asks.

"He can't remember anything." I say as the tears return.

"That can't be." he says walking over to him. "You know your name?" he asks. Rye sighs and shakes his head.

"No." he says looking down. I can tell that what this is hard and it hurts him as well.

"Alright, what do you remember?" the doctor asks. Rye shrugs and thinks for a while. "Your family?"

"No. Nothing. Its all gone." he says. I break out into tears and hold onto Peeta tightly. "Why are you crying? I'm sorry. I didn't mean it."

"No, you didn't. Its alright. Katniss, lets head out for a bit." he says pulling me out of the room. I lose my footing and he picks me up, setting me down while the doctor joins us.

"Whats wrong with him?" I ask while choking on my our tears. "Why can't he remember us?"

"I'm not sure. This really has never happened before. Its not right." he says. "I'll do some tests. I'm sure its nothing permanent." he nods.

"You think so?" Peeta asks. He nods and turns. 

"I'm sorry. If I would've known this I would've told you." he says looking down.

"Its not your fault.." I say. "Call us when you find something out." he nods and we make our way out of the hospital. I stop and look to Peeta who's just as destroyed as I am. "Please..Peeta come home." I beg. He smiles with tears streaming down.

"Of course I will." he says hugging me tightly. I don't care about him hitting me or him drinking again. He's still the man I've loved for the majority of my life and I want him back with me. We walk to the car before driving home. We walk in and I head up to our room, sitting down and running my hand through me hair.

"Mommy?" I look up and see Bryant. "Are you ok? Are you crying?" he asks walking over to me.

"I'm ok little one. Everything's okay." I say. He nods and walks in, climbing up and onto the bed with me. "How are you?"

"I'm good. I miss Rye." he says. I push down the tears and nod.

"I know baby boy. I know. He'll be home soon. I promise." I say. He smiles and nods. Its hurts making empty promises to me children but what am I supposed to do? I don't want then to know that they're brother forgot about them. Or that he may never be able to live with us again. But on the other hand its really bad to lie to your kids where you await that they never lie to you. I guess its for the best this time. "Why don't you go have a nap. Your tired. I gotta go do some things with dad." he nods and stands up, leaving the room and walking to his. I stand up and make my way down the stairs to see Peeta on the couch staring into space. "You alright?"

"Not really but its okay. At least Rye's awake. I was afraid he would never come back to us. The only problem is he doesn't remember us. How are we gonna fix that?" he asks looking up to me. I sigh and shrug, sitting down next to him.

"I don't know Peeta. Some how I'm sure but not now. Lets give it some time. I'm sure he's remember after a while." I say. He nods and we sit there for a while but something in my head tells me its only gonna get harder from here.
