Chapter 26 Darkness but Relief

Katniss POV

"Rye? Rye!" I yell as Peeta holds me back. "No! no Rye! Please!" the doctors rush in and start to revive Rye.

"Katniss..calm down." Peeta says but I can hear the fear and tears in his voice.

"No! Thats my baby! Let me go!" I yell as he and doctors start to pull me out of the room. "Peeta!"

"We have to let them work." he says falling to his knees, unable to hold himself up after the shock. "He'll be fine." I bury my face into his chest and let all the tears flow. The seconds turn to hours and soon to years as people rush in and out. I start to freak out, thrashing around. "Katniss! Calm down!"

"No! Let go! Let me go!" I yell. A doctor rushes to me, taking my arm and I feel a snarp pinch. "Peeta! Stop...let...let me...go." but I slip into darkness.

~Some Time Later~

"Katniss? Hey.." I open my eyes but they feel like they weigh tons. I focus abit to see Peeta and two other people.

"Peeta? Pe..Rye?! Where is he?!" I try to get up but straps around my wrists and ankles hold me down. 

"Hey! Katniss! Calm down!" Peeta says.

"No! Where's Rye?!" I say. He sighs and looks down. "No..Peeta please don't tell me that!" 

"No...he fell into a deep coma." he says. "They...don't know for how long." the tears start to pour out.

"But..is he okay?" I ask.

"Yes, he's fine." he says. I nod and look to the others to see mom? And...Haymitch?

"What are you doing here?" I ask.

"Your my daughter, I had to come and see you and Haymitch? We've become friends." she says. I nod and sigh. 

"Can I see Rye?" I ask.

"Not yet, soon, when your doing better." Peeta says. I groan and look down to my now red and sore wrists and ankles.

"Can they at least undo these straps?" I ask. He nods and stands up, leaving the room.

"What happened?" mom asks.

"I was out with Rye, I gave him my old knife. He...slipped and fell and it happened." I say looking down. "I never meant for it to happen."

"I know angel. I know you didn't." she says. "Rye's fine, be happy he's alive." I nod as a doctor walks back in with Peeta. They walk over to me and he undoes the straps.

"We're sorry Mrs. Mellark. We had to be safe with you." he says. I nod and sit up. "Your free to leave if you want."

"No..I want to see my son first." I say getting out of bed.

"Alright, he's still in the same room as before." he says. I nod and leave the room, walking down the hallway to Rye's room. I open the door to see him sleeping. I walk in and over to him, sitting down and taking his hand.

"He's stable. The inner bleeding and organs are slowly healing. Everything's going okay." the doctor says. I nod and look down.

"Do you know how long he'll be in a coma?" I ask.

"Not really? But for now its safer." he says before turning and leaving. I sit there, holding his hand tight and hoping everything will be okay. just as Peeta walks in.

"Hey, I wanted to talk to you." he says walking over to me.

"Okay." I say standing up.

"Look...the little ones have been asking where Rye is...we wanted to know if they could come and see him." he says.

"It could be hard for them, you know how much they love Rye." I say.

"Yes I know but we can't keep this from them. There is a chance he'll never wake up again." he says. I sigh and nod, knowing its the truth.

"Okay..yeah..your right. They should come here tomorrow." I say. He nods and pulls me in for a hug.

"Its gonna be okay Katiniss, alright? He's strong. He'll make it." he says. I nod and hug him tightly back. He's right, everything will be okay...or...I hope so at least.
