“You know… for getting stabbed, you should be feeling a lot worse. You must have something very important motivating you, huh kid?” The doctor observes my wound and I bite my lip when he pokes a sore spot. “But you don’t look that bad… so I guess I can’t keep you any longer… much to my disappointment.” Red holds onto my sleeve so tight that I think my arm might pop out of its socket. For the past few days she and the Crew have been looking for Cry themselves… to no avail. We’ve checked all the places he would be at… I know where he won’t be, and where he should be. So why can’t I find him?
“How is Nate doing today?” I ask, changing the subject. The doctor’s face immediately looks old and gray… Nate and Minx have become very popular since they’ve been here. Some nurses even like to go in and read with Minx, and they hang balloons by his bed and place flowers there. I wish Cry could see it. I think it would make him really happy that Nate was getting that kind of treatment… but he hasn’t visited Nate for weeks, since the day he found about it. I feel bad for the kid… the only person who really goes to see him is Minx and myself. Genia acts like there isn’t a problem and Cry refuses to talk about it.
“Doing the same. Not better, not worse. We’re hoping that in the next few days the scale might tip a little… to show us what we should do.” He finishes taking my blood pressure and I stand up. “You better be careful young man. It seems like you and your friends seem to get caught here a lot more than others. Troublemakers, huh?” He smiles and I try at one. Even though it’s weak, it is the best I’ve got.
(oh you have no idea how long i’ve spent here)
“Yes sir,” I say and look at Red who is smiling widely. “Thank you very much for taking care of Nate so well. We all really appreciate it.”
“Usually people would be thanking for their own care,” he responds with a cheery smile, clapping a hand on my shoulder. “It’s nice to see a young person like you care so much about others. Shows your character, son.” I smile shyly and Red laughs and smiles at the old doctor.
“Kthxbai,” she says, grabbing my hand in her small one and sprinting out the door with me barely able to keep up with her. The doctor waves and I turn to give him one last look as the automatic doors slide shut.
“Jeez Red, slow down! You’re going to get us killed!” I yell and she stops before getting hit by a car. They glare at us as the family pulls by, honking their horn.
(don’t need anyone else getting hurt)
“Well, that would’ve been bad,” she states and I roll my eyes when we continue walking. This time looking left and right.
“No, really,” I snap and she shrugs. “You said we were going to meet the Crew? Interrogate some bitches, etcetera, etcetera.” She smiles and swings our hands back and forth. Usually I don’t like being touched… but… I don’t feel the watching today. I stare at her for a second, just thinking that she’s one of the best friends I’ve ever had.
