“Shit, shit, shit.” Cry opens the back door to the library and peeks out. He repeats that over and over until I smack him upside the head. He pauses for a second, and then realizes what he was doing.

“Cry, shut up,” I hiss, shoving him out the door. “Nate is bleeding and we have to leave. You’re making me feel panicky.” He looks at me for a moment, his mask off, tied onto his waist. I can only blink at how hollow and empty his blue eyes look. He looks at his brother, who is holding his arm with a grimace.

Blood flows through Nate’s fingers, yet he doesn’t complain. Tough kid. Cry looks at me for a second longer, and pulls a gun from his pocket. Okay, where the hell did he get that? Has he had that this whole time? He loads it and turns off the safety.

“Carry my brother, okay?” He holds out the gun and tiptoes out. Nate glares at me when I scoop him up. Damn, this kid is light. “Follow right behind me. I don’t want you two getting shot.” He sets down the gun for a second and ties his mask on his face. Out with the old Cry, in with the new.

“Do we even have a plan?” I grab his hand, and he wrenches it out of my grasp. The action was very violent… he usually… well… I bite my lip as he gives me a frosty glare. How is he not more upset over Amy? She was like his mom. The only one he had, too. So why isn’t he more upset? Why isn’t he crying and screaming and killing people like I’d imagine him if any of his family members joined the stars?

“Run like hell,” Cry says, and takes off. I stand still with shock for a moment, before quickly following after him. Immediately as we run out of cover, we’re shot at. Cry pauses for a second, shooting the gun with surprising accuracy, covering us. I think he even hits someone, from the scream that I hear. We’re halfway to my car, a huge black truck that I call “batman.”

“Are you okay, Nate?” I yell and Nate nods, saying something back that I don’t catch. The ground is wet under my feet.

“Get down!” Cry knocks me off my feet and a bullet goes so close that I can sense it whiz by. “Move, dammit.” He whisper-snarls, and I get off my ass and run. Nate, after I set him down, hops into the backseat. I hop into shotgun, and Cry gets into driver’s seat. Without a second glance he starts the car and drives off.

Everyone is silent for a second, before someone in the back speaks up.

“Um, hello, this is awkward.” Cry and I both whip our heads around and stare at a young woman with brown hair and purple streaks. She bites her lip. “I need your help.” The car swerves and I yell at Cry. I think he recognizes her.

“Eyes on the road, bitch!” I say, and he punches me on the arm. I look at him with a small half smile, and I know he wants to return it, but can’t. Cry obviously doesn’t want to smile right now.

“I see the stop sign, jerk.” He says quietly, and I laugh out loud.

“You guys can save your lovey-dovey stuff for later because I really do need your help.” The woman’s leg is shaking and her hands are constantly moving. “My girlfriend has been taken by Ken.”

“First… how the fuck did you get in my car?” Cry takes a turn on a road I don’t know, but I don’t complain. “I’d really like to know.”
