Everyone is talking to each other. People here are Minx, Red, Russ, Snake, Jund, Marzia, and surprisingly Spoon. No Mark, and I can't figure out if I should be disappointed or relieved that he doesn't want to talk to me. Maybe both? Cry is sprawled out on the sofa with a drink in his hand. Russ is sitting on top of him and even though Cry threatens to push him, he stays. Genia is making dinner in the other room with Red, Minx, and Marzia in there.
"Yo, Felix, you okay?" Spoon snaps his fingers under my nose. "Zoned out on me for a minute there."
"I'm good," I say, looking at Cry with a smile. "I've missed you, bro. Where have you been lately?" Spoon leans back in the chair he's sitting in with a relaxed smile. I can tell he's a little nervous to be around all these people but keeps it to himself.
"Well, Ken's been paying more attention to me," he says quietly so nobody else can hear. "Krism hasn't been doing what he asks, so he sends me around now. You know, to do his bidding and all that." He flutters his fingers at me, and I roll my eyes. After thinking about what bidding might mean, though, I stop thinking about it in a funny manner.
"Is that a good or bad thing, though?" I ask hesitantly and he shrugs. "What side are you on, if not with him? Because you seem awfully torn. I enjoy our friendship, and you seem like an amazing guy." My hand goes to the necklace and the warnings he has gave me.
"In morals and mind, your side. But in heart? I guess his." Biting my lip I tug at the necklace again. "I'm not sure what to do anymore. Mark won't even go a mile near you and Ken thinks I'm spying or whatever..."
"You're not..." I say, and he shakes his head. "That's what I thought, but you can't just stay torn. What did he say about the necklace? Did he notice it was missing?"
"Nothing. He doesn't remember." Spoon's face transforms into something like a kicked puppy. Sad and betrayed. "I thought he would, but he didn't." Touchy subject, I guess.
We both watch quietly as Cry tries to shove off Russ, making Jund laugh. Snake sits there with a half-smile, the guy doesn't laugh all that often. He's good, though.
"Get off!" He growls and tries to get up. I see Red peek in and laugh and quickly go back to the kitchen.
"I'm going to see what everyone is doing in the kitchen, okay?" Spoon nods but is too focused on what Cry and Russ are doing to really respond. I get up and go in the kitchen.
Red hugs me and gives me a half smile. Marzia waves from where she's sitting on the counter with Minx, who gives me a grin. Genia stops what she's doing and smacks me with the spoon.
"Old woman," I say, looking up into her face.
"Boy." She smacks me again, and goes back to what she's doing. I pick up a spoon and start helping her. She looks at me with slit eyes, but it's the kind of eyes that you can see right past. Genia doesn't really mind me at all.
"You're getting soft, Old G." She snorts and goes back to stirring the soup she's making. I start cutting up vegetables, ignoring the loud chattering of the girls in the background.
"Whatever, short stuff." We prepare the food in silence for a while. "I can tell you have a question you want to ask. What's wrong with you?"
"What's going to happen on the fourth day?" I ask in a small voice. "I dunno, there's just so much to think about, I can't-"
"Stop it. You're pissing me off. Everything will be okay. It has to be this time." My knife slips and I cut my finger. "Someone told me once that there has to be an equivalent exchange. You've lost so much, you're bound to gain something this time around." She stops what she's doing for a second and fishes in a cabinet, handing me a band aid.
"That can't be how the universe works." I open the band aid and start wrapping my finger up.
"Why not?" She asks. "I lost my daughter, but I gained many more youngsters that flit in and out of my life. Who take care of me. I lost Amy but now I see Cry a lot more than I have." I slam my fist down, and everyone in the room goes quiet. The girls watch quietly, but Red ushers them out so it's just Genia and I in the room.
"That's a god damn lie. Some people's lives are just unfair from the start. There isn't any such thing. People loose things that they can never have back in any equivalency. Life isn't fair."
"The way I see it, you lost everything, but you gained Cry." I look away from her piercing gaze. "Well?"
"I don't know. Who am I to try to understand the universe? I'm just some kid." Setting the knife down, I ignore her as I walk out of the room. I come face to face with Cry right away.
At the same time, we both speak.
"Are you okay?"
"Can we go home?"
He looks at me hesitantly. I can tell he doesn't want to leave his friends, he's having a good time.
"I'm not feeling well," I say quietly. "I'll just go home myself, and you can catch a ride with someone?"
"I might stay here tonight, though." He kisses my forehead. "Do you really want to go back to Amy's by yourself?"
"I think I can manage," I say, and he frowns. "I'm okay. Just tired, and feeling kind of sick. Have fun with everyone, okay?" Before he can say anything else I push past a protesting Red and leave Genia's.
Equivalent exchange, my ass. No such thing. I think as I open the car door and get in.
Looks like I'll be sleeping alone again.
