I zone out as we walk to where Pewdie wants to show me, thinking about Amy and the first time I met her.
//flashback//
“What are you doing?” I flinch away from Ken’s fist and a younger woman, much taller than Ken, catches his arm. “You stop beating up him right now!” She glares at him, and for a second, my eyes widen as Ken backs away. It’s the first time in forever someone has stood up to him. He looks at me and his eyes narrow. Turning on his heel, he stalks away.
“Who are you?” She reaches her hand down and my hands immediately fly up to protect my face. She gasps at my reaction.
“I’m not… I’m not going to hurt you. My name is Amy.” She gets down on the floor, getting her jeans all wet and dirty, and touches my shoulder gently. “I would never hurt you.”
“You promise?” I ask in a small voice, so unlike me, and she nods. Before then nobody had ever promised me safety – not even my own brother. So this woman was like… and angel out of many demons.
“I promise,” she says, grabbing my hand and helping me up.

“Are you listening to me?” Felix squeezes my hand and I jump a little. “Ha, I knew it! You weren’t listening.”
“Sorry,” I say with guilt. “I was thinking about Amy… I met her not far from here, actually. One good memory that I have.”
“It’s alright. I don’t mind.” He smiles, but it fades as we turn into an alley.
“Is this it?” I look around, recognizing it as part as my past as well. This is part of Ken’s territory. The place where I met Amy… and the place where I killed someone.
“This is where one of my best friends and… a person that I was in love with died.” He leads me down an alley I’ve walked before, not far from the orphanage. He’s holding my hand so tight that I think it might fall off.
“What was his name?” I wrap my arm around his shoulder.
“His name was Mark. I fell in love with him when I was very young.” We both sit down with each other and lean against the wall. “He wasn’t really a bully or a monster like a lot of the people from my old home were. People usually liked the kids who were funny and silly, and Mark was the best. People kept him around for shits and giggles, same with me.”
“Hmm,” is all I say. I’ve seen those kids before. Ken has a few of his own that he keeps around. Pewdie continues talking.
“The first time I met Mark, he kissed me. Just like that. He had never been gay before, but he said when he saw me… his exact words were ‘I couldn’t help myself.’ After that we became like a team of sorts. Entertaining the other kids, and in turn, they would leave us alone. We sat at the most popular table. We ate all the best food. We got all the best treatment.”
