While Emily and the rest of the team were gone, you stayed in DC, sightseeing and hanging out with Penelope when she wasn't working. This case was a long one, they had been gone 4 days and Emily had called to say she thought they would be gone at least 2 more days or so, so you went to stay with Penelope for a couple of nights, you liked the company and she was great company. On day 6, you were lying on Penelope's couch with your feet on the armrest while she was making you drinks.

"So did Reid ever call you?" She called out from her kitchen and you shot up, sitting upright,
"No... Penelope what did you do?" You asked, your eyes widening as she came through, handing you a homemade cocktail.
"I just suggested he give you a call, that's all! I can't help it, when I see a perfect match, something needs to be done about it!" Her voice got more and more high pitched as she kept talking and she sat down next to you.
"Penelope! I told you, I just can't, even if I do kind of like him... I'm going back to London in a week." "You began to mumble, leaning back on the couch and taking a sip of the very strong drink you had been made, wincing slightly.
"You just said! You do like him! I knew it!" She exclaimed, pointing her fingers at you, but soon enough her thrill was wiped off her face and taken over with disappointment, "But, if you're going home in a week, then I guess you're right." She admitted unwittingly. You turned your head to look at her and pulled her a slight smile and she smiled back.

The next day, you woke up to a text from Emily:

[Emily]
Finished the case this morning, be back
this afternoon. Can you pick up some
stuff for dinner?

[You]
Of course, see you when you get back

You replied and decided to have a shower, being careful not to wake Penelope. While you were in the shower you heard your phone ringing from the other room but you had to let it ring out. Once you got out you wrapped yourself in a towel and squeezed out your hair before going over to see who had called you. Unknown number. Strange.

You called the number back and it only rang for a few seconds before a familiar voice was at the other end, "Dr Spencer Reid?" Spencer picked up the phone, his voice was so cute.
"Hi Spencer, it's Y/N. You called me? Sorry I was in the shower." You were smiling even though you knew he couldn't see you. Penelope came out of her bedroom in a dressing gown mouthing something at you, but you couldn't tell what so you shrugged at her and she rolled her eyes and went into the kitchen to get some coffee.

"Yeah, it's no problem at all. I-I was just wondering... Wondering if you'd like to go out sometime. Of course you don't have to, we were just wrapping up a case and..." He rambled and you started to feel bad, you didn't want to turn him down, but like you had said to Penelope last night, you couldn't start something with someone who after a week was going to be thousands of miles away. "Spencer, I'm leaving in a week." You said sadly,
"Oh, well, we could still, um, we could still go? It doesn't need to come to anything, I'd just like to get to know you a bit better. Without the rest of the team." He said nervously, you could tell he was a bit disappointed you were leaving so quickly, and honestly so were you.
"Okay, I would love to, Dr Reid." You said mocking him slightly at how he had picked up the phone and he laughed slightly through the phone.
"How's Tuesday night?" You could feel his smile even from a hundred miles away.
"Perfect." You replied,
"I can't wait. I'll pick you up from Emily's at 8." Spencer replied excitedly,
"I'll see you then, bye." You bit your lower lip and Spencer hung up the phone.

Penelope came back in the room handing you a cup of coffee, "Who was that?" She asked suggestively,
"Um, just a friend. Turns out they relocated to DC and we're going to get dinner on Tuesday." You lied, but you also didn't know how this was going to turn out; as much as you wanted it to work, the likelihood of it doing so was pretty low. You were trying to hide your smile so Penelope couldn't read you but you weren't doing a very good job. Even though you were intent on not starting anything here in America, hearing his voice managed to make you abandon that idea all together. He was intriguing, he drew you in like a fish on a hook and you couldn't resist.

You left Penelope's place a few hours later, going to the store closest to Emily's apartment to grab some food as you hadn't been back in a few days except to grab clothes. You decided you were going to make a nice big roast dinner for Emily for when she got back. Nothing like comfort food after kicking criminal ass. When you got back to her apartment you immediately started cooking, it was best to slow roast the meat to get it just how you liked it and you also wanted to make some brownies for dessert so you needed quite a bit of time.

"Hellooo? Oh my gosh, what smells amazing?" Emily shouted as she walked through the he front door, dropping her bags next to the door. You were perched on the kitchen countertop reading a paper on astrochemistry while keeping an eye on your food. You jumped down and gave Emily a hug, "I'm making dinner. Thought you could do with a nice home cooked meal."
"You are just the best." She said wrapping her arms around you, "Wait are you cooking and reading a science paper?" She pulled away and picked up your literature,
"Calling it a science paper makes it sounds like I'm doing high school homework."

Spencer couldn't have told Emily about your date on Tuesday or it would have been the first thing she said when she came through the door, so you decided not to bring it up. It was quite nice to have something that was just yours.

Once dinner was ready you ate and drank and Emily told you about the case they had been working. "I don't know how you do it Em, doesn't it all just get too much? Seeing the worst humanity has to offer everyday?" You asked sympathetically, she sighed,
"Of course it does, but I'm also helping people. You get that." She replied thoughtfully.
"Yeah I do, that's why I became a doctor."
"Yeah 3 different kinds of doctor." Emily snarked, you wanted to argue back but decided not to and instead just nodded slightly making Emily giggle a little.

Tuesday rolled around pretty quickly and you had told Emily the same thing you had told Penelope about meeting an old friend. You were stressing quite a lot about what to wear, you wanted to look nice but not too nice. You had no idea where Spencer was going to be taking you and you hadn't packed too many going out outfits. "Em!" You shouted, walking into her bedroom to see her reading on the bed, "Yeah?" She replied and you leant on the doorframe for her bedroom,
"Can I look through your wardrobe? I didn't pack any date worthy outfits." You said, and instantly regretted it.
"A date? I thought this was just a catchup?" Emily replied a little too excitedly, jumping up off the bed towards her wardrobe and rummaged through it.
"It's not a date, I just... you know what I mean." You tried to defend yourself, your cheeks going a bit pink.

After around 40 minutes of deliberation, you decided on a black satin dress with a belt around the waist and a jacket that was around the same length. Dressy enough so that if it was a fancy restaurant you looked the part, but casual enough so that it was a bar, you didn't look overdressed. You curled your hair similar to how you had when you went out with the BAU team and did some basic makeup again. "Jesus, Y/N you look so beautiful, it's a shame you're not going on a date!" Emily said and you laughed nervously, if only she knew.

You put on some heels that you had packed, even though you didn't remember packing them and stood in front of the mirror looking at yourself. You took a deep breath. This was the first date you had been on in so long, you weren't really sure how to even do the dating thing properly anymore. You looked at your watch, it was 7:59pm, the second it turned 8, Spencer sent you a message saying he was outside Emily's building and you smiled at your phone, texting back that you were on your way down.

"Bye Emily!" You shouted, heading for the door,
"Have a good time! But not too much of a good time!" She shouted back,
"Oh piss off!" You yelled, laughing slightly and shutting the door behind you.
