Over the next few days Reuben was your only patient as he required around the clock care and assistance and Rueben's mother was a single parent trying to afford hundreds of thousands worth of medical bills so she needed to work quite often. That was definitely a good thing about living in the UK, you didn't ever have to worry about medical bills with free health care.
You had become quite close to Eliza and Reuben, and after getting to know her more and her you, she felt okay about going back to work when you were able to watch over her son. Your dad had also had to go home so it was just you and Spencer at home now.
Even though it had been 4 days, Reuben still hadn't woken up since the accident.

2 weeks later and Reuben had undergone 3 more surgeries and been on dialysis and the only change was that Reuben was now breathing on his own and no longer needed to be intubated, but he was still unconscious.
One evening you and Eliza were sat in Reuben's room, drifting off to the sound of the ECG,
"Mommy?" A soft, high pitched voice said from the hospital bed and you and Eliza jumped up to see Reuben's eyes flickering open and stirring slightly,
"Yes baby? Mommy's here, mommy's here." Eliza replied, through her tears of joy as she gently cuddled her son.
You felt the corners of your mouth turn up as you watched them both, he was going to be okay.
A few minutes later once Eliza had controlled her tears and Reuben was a bit more awake, you needed to do an exam, "Reuben, honey, this is Doctor Y/LN, she's been looking after you here in the hospital. We like her very much."
"Hi Doctor Y/LN." Reuben croaked, even smiling gently,
"Hi Reuben, it's good to see you awake. Do you mind if I do a few checks?"
Reuben shook his head gently and you began to exam him.

When you got home later that evening you were in the best mood you had been in for a long time, "Hey!" You called out as you closed the front door, tossing your keys in the dish,
"Hey! How was your day?" Spencer chirped back as you walked into the kitchen where Spencer stood unpacking the Indian food you had both decided to order in that day,
"Reuben woke up." You smiled and so did Spencer,
"That's amazing! Eliza must be so happy, how's he doing?"
Since Reuben had come into the hospital you had been informing Spencer on everything that happened with Reuben's case, it was kind of therapeutic for the both of you to be thinking about another child and what you could do to help him, instead of thinking about what had happened to both of you. Spencer had also managed to use some connections from the FBI to get Reuben into a private room a week or so earlier so that him and Eliza had more privacy, which Eliza was very greatful for.
"Amazing! All things considering, I'm surprised he's doing this well." You followed Spencer around as he took both of your plates of food to the dining table and you sat down next to him. Spencer grabbed your hand and kissed your knuckles,
"I'm so glad to see you happy again."
"I'm happy to be happy again." You smiled, and Spencer kissed you on the forehead before taking you in his arms, enveloping you in his embrace. It felt good. Like for the first time in weeks that you could accept Spencer's hugs without a feeling of mutual sadness or upset, just relief.
You felt your body relax into Spencer, your shoulders opening and your body less stiff. You felt almost normal. You wrapped your arms back around him and listened to the sound of his heart, taking in the rhythm of his even, gentle, heartbeat, perfectly in time with your own.
