I know what love is now. It's continuously putting the other first because their happiness is more important than your own. It's understanding that the wind can blow at any moment, and lead them to another person, and that it's okay. It's knowing that you want them, forever, as long as they want you, no matter what. It's when their smiles fill you with sunshine, and their sadness gives you a mission. It's knowing them inside and out, their light, as well as their complexities, and caring for them just as deeply.

I was talking to my parents last night about my recent break up.

"And you know what I've figured out too now?" I said, "I need someone that can take care of me. I'm always taking care of people and being strong for them but for someone who is going to be my life partner, I need someone who is going to be strong for me."

My dad just looked at me and said "Sweetie, you just described love. That's what love is."

Love is hard.

It's petty fights and arguing over insignificant things. It's getting mad for no reason, and loosing your temper.

Love isn't easy.

It isn't always midday picnics in the parks, and watching the sun paint the sky vibrant shades of yellow and orange.

Love is selfish.

It's territorial. It's wanting that person to be yours and only yours, and needing them to function.

Love is jealous.

-unexplainable amounts of jealousy. It's jealousy emerging when there is no threat. It's getting mad at them for speaking to that person who is supposedly "better looking" than you.

Love is vulnerability.

It's giving the person the power to shatter you completely. It's trusting them with all your deepest, darkest secrets yet still wanting to know more.

Most of all..
Love is complicated.

It's unrequited and painful. It makes you overthink, and gives people the chance to scar you. It's so many emotions filled into one that you explode and the negative factors overwhelm you to the point of be incapable of getting out of bed in the morning.

But love is also warm, and consuming. It's passionate, yet tragically romantic. Love gives you the opportunity to thrive. It can result in you being joyful, and happy, and full of life.

Love is so many negative and positive things that none of us can really decided if it's good or bad. And that's the best part.

Love is a rollercoaster. And even though you may be breathless when the ride is over, at least you enjoyed the journey

what is love?
a question that is asked around and around the world
hundreds of
thousands of
millions of
times
"stupid,
overrated,
disgusting"
i would answer
but that was before
that one fall day
when the sun shined through the glass windows
casting an angelic glow on you
and that was when
your smile
your laugh
your voice
mesmerized me
captured me
and held onto me
never letting go
and all at once
i felt the start of something
that hasn't died since that warm fall day
...
what is love?
i ask myself
again
but this time
my answer is different
what is love?
i ask myself
this
this is love.

I'd like to think that love is when someone says your name and just the way they say it makes your heart skip a beat. That you just need to hear them repeat, and love hearing them speak it, that for the first time your name sounds magical, sounds like music or poetry. That you love your name when they speak it even though you've always hated your name.
