The following week, Adrien did everything within his power to avoid Marinette. He was already enduring a difficult morning when he rolled over in bed and jolted awake at the sight of his alarm clock. He was ten minutes late for school. After, the only memories from the morning he could recollect were bouncing around his room to wiggle into his clothes then pulling up to the school.
When he arrived, the car skidded to an earsplitting halt, and the Gorilla grunted a curt farewell as Adrien climbed out of the backseat. Adrien gave him a brief wave before turning forward and spotting his friend with brown hair and black glasses.
"Alya!" He yelled, as his feet pounded up the stairs.
Alya paused and turned around to face him with her usual friendly smile. "Oh, hey! What is up?"
"I'm fine. Thanks," Adrien heaved, resting his hands on his knees. "Are you late too?"
She chuckled at his breathless state. "Looks like it," she casually replied, and Adrien scratched his neck when he realized they were among the final few in the entrance.
Adrien finally asked the question he had wanted to since he arrived, "Where is Marinette?" He had noticed her absence but did not want to appear obsessive. Also, Alya was aware he had been avoiding her.
Although, Alya seemed to feel out of place without her plucky best friend present, she managed. "She told me she was sick. She sounded nasally over the phone, so it is probably just a cold." As she and Adrien walked to homeroom, she admitted, "It is unusual for Marinette to miss school though. It must be serious."
Now that she mentioned, Adrien realized Marinette had never missed a day of school since he enrolled at Françoise Dupont. "Yeah," he absentmindedly replied. "I hope she is okay." He noticed Ayla's shift in mood and her soft smile when he admitted that but could not understand why. "Why are smiling like that?"
"No reason," she dismissed. "I am just happy Marinette and you are becoming closer."
Becoming closer? "Oh, um, yeah, I guess so," he stammered, remembering the kiss outside the bakery a week before.
"Are you blushing?" Alya teased, playfully jabbing his ribs.
"No!" Adrien abruptly rejected while swatting her off. Involuntarily, he brushed his face and was horrified when his face was hot to touch.
"Alright," Alya shrugged, but it was obvious she did not believe it. Honestly, the way Adrien pronounced it, nobody would believe it.
Once they reached their homeroom, Madam Bustier was already waiting for them. "Adrien, Alya, can I speak with you?" She greeted them in front of the threshold of the classroom door. The duo did what any students would do: share a worried expression that indirectly asked, what did you do, without verbalizing.
"Yes, madam Bustier," Alya replied, fidgetingly tucking her hair behind her ears. They braced themselves for a lecture on punctuality.
"I need you to take Marinette's homework to her tonight. I know you are her good friend," Madam Bustier explained. Alya and Adrien sighed in unison from relief and telepathically resolved to thank Marinette for being absent after the bell rang; she saved them from being marked late. With a newfound confidence, they followed Madam Bustier over to her desk.
"You need me to take these to Marinette?" Alya inquired, gesturing toward a pile of books on the desk. When Madam Bustier nodded, she grinned. That glint in her eyes caused Adrien to quiver and his stomach to flip. I do not like where this is going. Anytime she had that expression, something went wrong unfortunately.
