Adrien sat in his spiny-chair as he scrolled lazily through the Ladyblog. No new updates from the last time he had checked.

He groaned and pressed the power button on his computer, shutting it off. He got up and walked toward the window.

Oh, how he hated his window.

It felt like bars - much less a window. It seemed to consume him and cast shadows upon his room. Everyday the shadows seemed to get bigger and darker. The bars had always been there but never did he notice them until his mother left. Now the golden face of his mother only stayed in a frame and grew more unrecognizable each passing day.

Knock, knock.

Adrien blinked a few times. Echoes sounded around his hollow room, and he could tell who was at the door by the sound of the echoes. "Come in," he called, not even bothering to turn toward the door.

"Adrien," the voice of his father greeted him in a monotonous voice. He never said hello anymore. Not since Adrien's mother had disappeared. "I just wanted  you to know you have a photoshoot tomorrow right after school."

His large feet made the wood floor beneath him make faltering noises. He made way for the door, but Adrien stopped him in his tracks. "Wait," Adrien said in a low voice, almost talking to himself before raising his voice to the standard talking noise level. "I need to talk to you."

Adrien's father turned back around and nodded his head, giving his son permission to speak.

"We were learning about the Hawaiian culture and language," Adrien informed. His father raised his right eyebrow and tapped his foot upon the floor, urging him to get on with it. "We learned this funny but nice word," he paused.

"Ohana," he breathed out, "and Ohana means family. And you know what I've realized?"

Adrien's father's usual serious face turned into a frown, not liking where this was going. "Over the past few months that mom has been gone, I've realized that family means nobody ever gets left behind or forgotten."

There was a lingering silence in the room that hung over them like a sword.

"Ohana, it's a funny word," Adrien said, talking to himself and pronouncing the word Ohana in a smooth way. "A very, very funny word."
