"Thank you for helping me, Adrien," Marinette said, as she settled into Nino's usual seat beside the boy. "I really appreciate you helping me."
"You're welcome," Adrien responded, opening up his Mandarin textbook. "I have a question though. Why did you ask me to be your tutor anyway?"
Marinette chuckled and shifted in her seat awkwardly. "Well, my family and I going to Shanghai over the summer to visit family, and my mom told me I should learn some Mandarin before we go." She sighed in disappointment and looked down at shuffling feet under the desk. "I'm just disappointed I never learned any of my native language before."
"Hey," Adrien spoke softly. He fought the urge to touch her chin up and bring her to face him, but she had already looked up at him before he could move. "It doesn't matter if you haven't learned Mandarin until now. All that matters is you are choosing to learn now and sticking with it."
A sense of fluttering butterflies rose in Marinette's stomach, as she listened to him and met his green eyes. She broke away from his hypnotizing gaze and voluntarily coughed to fill the silence. "Okay, let's start," she announced quite loudly, bringing Adrien's textbook closer towards her.
Adrien only chuckled and gazed down to analyze his textbook, thinking about where to begin.
Mandarin lessons soon became the normal for Marinette and Adrien. The occasional awkward silence between questions was quickly replaced by childish bickering and casual flirting. Marinette became more comfortable around Adrien, and Adrien was pleasantly surprised by her wit and intelligence.
One afternoon after school, the pair were finishing their daily lesson when Adrien pointed at a statement in the textbook. "Read this one. Be sure to pronounce it correctly," he stated. Marinette shuffled closer to him to read it, and Adrien's breath hitched momentarily.
He didn't want to admit it, but he had started to have feelings for the girl. However, with Marinette's growing confidence, it seemed like Adrien's disappeared.
Marinette examined the line in the textbook then turned to face Adrien, looking him in the eyes. "你很可爱," she said slowly, enunciating every syllable.
Adrien's face grew hot, and he quickly looked away from her and coughed roughly. "Um, I-I think we're d-done for today," he stood up. He rushed out of the classroom, leaving an extremely confused girl.
After it was evident he was gone, Tikki emerged from Marinette's bag. "Did I say something wrong?" Marinette asked, and she looked down at the book Adrien had accidentally left behind in his hurry.
"He left his textbook," Tikki remarked, and Marinette only nodded, still in shock over Adrien running out so quickly.
"Maybe it was what I said?" Marinette asked, and Tikki only shrugged. The girl plugged the sentence she had said earlier into her translation app.
Marinette gasped at the results.
你很可爱.
You're cute.

"Adrien, I am so sorry," Marinette apologized, sitting down next to the boy in their usual spot and placing the textbook he had left the day prior on the desk.
Adrien looked up at her in confusion. "What are you sorry for?"
"Saying what I said yesterday," she replied, but Adrien's eyebrows furrowed, signaling he still didn't understand what she was saying. "你很可爱," Marinette repeated from the other day, and Adrien's face turned a rosy color again.
Marinette noticed this and got embarrassed. "I didn't know what it meant, and now I feel embarrassed." Her hands rose to shield her reddening face.
"No, no," Adrien hastily repeated, waving his hands dismissively. "It's okay. I was surprised and kind of embarrassed."
Marinette giggled softly, but she could not shake the feeling of curiosity. "Why?"
"Huh?"
"Why were you embarrassed?"
"I guess I have realized these past few weeks just how much I care about you and how you view me. I just think I have started to notice more about you..." He trailed off, but Marinette nodded her head, urging him to continue.
"I think I," he said slowly. "I-I think 我喜欢你."
Wait, did I say that in Mandarin? Adrien sighed. Yes, I did.
Even though Marinette could not understand a lot of Mandarin, she knew what he said immediately. She could not help but laugh and smile uncontrollably.
Adrien wanted to sink into his chair when he heard her laugh. "Forget it! Don't worry about it! Let's just continue the lesson! I'm-"
"我也喜欢你," Marinette cut off Adrien's rambling.
After a few moments of silence, Adrien leaped out of his chair in joy and yelled in excitement. "Really?" He exclaimed, as his eyes lit up with unimaginable shock.
Marinette only nodded, and a smile appeared on her face.
"I like you."
"I like you too."
