A quiet knock echoed around Marinette's room. Am I dreaming? She thought, yawning and stretching out on the chair next to her desk. It was extremely late, and the only reason she was up was to finish the designs she had been working on.

The sound was so quiet she almost thought it was her imagination. Nevertheless, she rose to her feet and strode over to the door leading to the balcony where the noise came from.

"Huh?" was all she could say when she saw the person before her. "Chat Noir?"

The leather clad superhero was standing outside on her balcony. His mask was able to hide his identity but not his troubles. They were slightly pink, and his hidden face was puffy from crying.

"Hey," Marinette acknowledged him in a voice just above a whisper. She didn't even know if he had heard her until he looked her in the eyes and another series of tears escaped his gaze.

"Aw, poor kitty," the girl said in an attempt to comfort him. She walked out onto the balcony and threw her arms over his neck, while he sobbed onto her shoulder. His salty tears were soaking her shirt, but she didn't mind and only pulled him closer.

After a few minutes of silence except for Chat Noir's sobbing that was slowly turning to hushed sniffling, Marinette had sat down on the balcony. Chat Noir's head was situated in her lap, and she calmly stroked his golden hair.

"I'm sorry, Marinette," Chat Noir finally whispered out once he was able to properly form a sentence. He hadn't wanted to burden the girl with his problems, but she was the only one he could think of that would help him. He also could not sneak out of the house without transforming, because his bodyguard would follow him around.

"It's okay," Marinette reassured him, continuing to run her fingers through his hair. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"I can't really say anything that wouldn't jeopardize my identity. All I can say is I really miss my mom, and my dad is never around to talk to." Chat Noir explained, choosing his words carefully.

The girl hummed in acknowledgement, but she did not pry further. She had just calmed him down and since he had come to her for comfort, she did not want to upset him again.

Pondering over his worries, Marinette remembered a beautiful song she had heard and began to sing in an effort to fill the silence. "When I was younger, I saw my daddy cry and curse at the wind," she began, "broke his own heart, and I watched as he tried to reassemble it."

Chat Noir stared up at her and smiled at the sound of her voice. It was sweet and powerful, and his nerves calmed greatly. "And my mother swore that she would never let herself forget, and that was the day that I promised I'd never sing of love if it does not exist." Marinette gazed down at Chat Noir and returned his smile before he joined in.

"Well, darling, you are the only exception," they harmonized. "You are the only exception. You are the only exception."

"You are the only exception." They finished, staring closely at each other.

"Thank you, Marinette," Chat Noir said breathlessly, not removing his gaze from her.

Marinette's trance was broken when he spoke, and she quickly looked away from him. "You're welcome," she replied. Her cheeks were burning and turning into a rosy color.

Chat Noir chuckled at her embarrassment and laughed even more when she yawned. "Well, I think that's my cue to leave," he said, standing up. Marinette stood up too, hugging him one last time.

He left to return home, but singing this song soon became a consistent action in Marinette and Chat Noir's lives whenever he was feeling lonely.

However, the next month, Marinette and Alya were walking into school, and something strange happened.

"Come on, girl! You got this! Just go confess already!" Alya encouraged her best friend, who smiled in response.

"I don't know, but I'll give it a shot," Marinette said. She was walking toward Adrien, who was sitting alone on a bench in the school yard, but she hesitated when she noticed his pitiful expression.

She was about to ask him what was wrong, but she heard a familiar melody. "You are the only exception. You are the only exception," Adrien sang to himself.

What?

"Marinette! Class is starting!" Alya called her, and Marinette shook her head. No, it's just a coincidence. There's no way. There's no way, she repeated to herself, as she ran towards her best friend.

Still, Marinette could not help but gaze back at the boy on the bench and wonder.
