Facing Reality

Eva's POV

My internal alarm went off and I was up at 6am. The bed was empty, Anna's cane, phone and little belongings weren't there so I texted her.

Me: Morning, when did u leave?

B: Morning, bout an hr ago.

Me: Y?

B: Well I needed underwear.

Me: Ok c u at skl.

B: Ok

I sat with my thoughts and tried to find a conclusion for Anna and I's relationship. I loved her but she isn't properly able to express herself and that affected me emotionally. She once said that she was angry at herself for how attached to me she was and it all made sense now. She needed me but she didn't want to need me and when the need faded what would become of us? I refused to think any further and got up to get ready for school.

I got to school and met up with my friends at our usual spot, Anna was there already.

"Wazzzuuupp!" I said and they all responded. Anna looked at me and smiled.

"Eva, did you enjoy your birthday?" Sab asked.

"Hell yeah, thanks to all of you guys. I love y'all." I said. They aww'd and returned the love. The school bell rang soon after and we filtered to our respective classes.

First period was math which Anna and Katie were also in. I was a bit nervous because Brad, the new guy, sat next to me since Anna went MIA for however long and would flirt with me ever so often. I sat down and he came in soon after, Katie and Anna waltzed up a few seconds after him.

Anna looked at Brad and then to me, I smiled nervously and she winked. Whew, she wasn't upset but then I thought even if she was we weren't together so I wasn't doing anything wrong. Class was boring for the most part but Anna was answering questions like she never missed a moment, she seemed unbothered by Brad's presence.

I struggled though the rest of the classes before lunch. I got to the lunch table and everyone except Anna was there.

"Where's Anna?" Sab asked.

"I was just about to ask y'all." I said. I sat and Brad approached our table almost immediately after.

"Hey Eva uh excuse me." he interrupted.

"Hey Brad, what's up?" I asked.

"Ayo fools." Anna said as she arrived and sat next to me. What perfect timing.

"Hey idiot! Continue Brad." Katie told him. It was such and awkward moment for him but he quickly overcame it and spoke.

"Eva, would you want to watch a movie with me on Friday?" he asked. I looked at Anna and she smiled. I suddenly felt warm hands on my upper thigh. My stomach hitched and I whimpered softly at the touch.

"Eva, he's waiting for your answer." Anna said calmly. She applied pressure and moved higher up my thigh until her pinky finger touch my spot. I discreetly held her hand in place so she couldn't go further.

"Yeah sure, no problem." I said and she removed her hand immediately. He smiled and left.

"Yo! So y'all not together?" Katie asked.

"Apparently it's complicated." Anna scoffed.

"Didn't seem complicated when you were all up on Anna at your birthday dinner." Katie said.

"Eva, don't bring that boy in the middle of this if his feelings are gonna end up getting hurt." Devyn chimed in. Sab shook her head in agreement.

Devyn was right but I was so lost and confused. I just needed company outside of Anna and my friends, something different.

Anna's POV

Eva agreed to go on a date right in front on me and although I was annoyed, I accepted it as a challenge. I had to get Eva back by the hook or by the crook.

We ate and talked until lunch period was over. I focused completely in class for the rest of the day because during lunch I received a message from my Mom, she was back home. I had to distract myself from the inevitable heartache I had to face at home in a few.

After school I stayed back until the parking lot emptied, contemplating whether I was strong enough to go home. I left the car park two hours after school was over and drove to where I would be comforted.

I pulled up, got out and rang the bell. Eva's mom opened the door.

"Good Afternoon Mrs. Cudmore. Is Eva home?" I asked.

"Afternoon Anna, she's in her room." she said. I thanked her and walked up stairs. I opened the door and she was by her desk doing what seemed to be homework.

"Boon? What are you doing here?" she asked. I sat at the edge of her bed and didn't respond. She sighed, got up from her seat and walked over and stood in front of me. I immediately clutched her waist and began sobbing uncontrollably. She gently rubbed my back which helped to calm me down.

She stooped down to my level and asked "What's wrong?".

"My mom is back and I haven't found the courage to go home just yet." I said.

"You have to face the reality of it at some point, you can't run bruh." she said.

"Would you come with me?" I asked her. She stood up and stepped back with her hands on her hips. She seemed to be processing the idea then she left the room for five minutes and came back.

"Let's go." she said and opened her hand for me to take it. I got up, took it and followed her downstairs. In that moment I realized how much control I gave Eva over me emotionally, physically and mentally.

We got to my house, she got out the jeep and walked over to my side. She opened my door, I came out and she closed the door. She held my hand as we walked inside. I led us upstairs and straight to my room. I sat in my gaming chair and spun it while I stared at the ceiling.

Eva sat on the love seat in my room and pretended to be on her phone but I knew she was looking at me the whole time. A knock on the door interrupted my empty thoughts.

"Come in." I said. My mother opened the door and stood there looking at me. I got up and walked over to her.

"I'm sorry princess." she said and opened her arms to embrace me. I held on to her and we both cried. In that moment I realized how much the loss of dad affected her, she just let it all out. She pulled back and looked at me then to my leg with pity and regret.

"I'm fine mommy, I'm healing." I told her to ease her obvious feeling of guilt. She gave a tight lipped smile and left my room.
