Chapter 37

Luz's POV

"Nice try!" I laughed.

Amity held her sword tightly and smiled at me. "Oh give me a break. I'm still new to this."

"You weren't even close." I teased.

Amity rolled her eyes. "Close enough." She chuckled.

In the distance behind Amity, I could see Amyra and Audrey sitting on a balcony talking.

Amity must have noticed it too.. "I wonder what's bothering Amyra.." she muttered.

I shrugged. "I don't know. We won't find out unless she or Audrey tells us." It still frustrated me that the former knight wasn't telling anyone what was going on.

"I dunno if she's even going to tell Audrey." Amity sighed. "Whatever it is it's messing her up bad.. She's so jumpy."

I nodded. "Yeah... No kidding. She jumps at almost everything." I agreed.

"Queen Luz, Princess Amity."

We both turned to the knight who was calling us.

"I know you're both training right now... But the council needs you." He said.

"Which one of us?" I asked.

"Both of you."

We quietly walked into the council room. Javier was staring us down, as if we had done something wrong.

"Queen Luz, Princess Amity." Javier nodded.

"You called for us.. In the middle of training... When I ask not to be disturbed." I couldn't hold off the heavy sarcasm in my voice.

Javier gave a light nod. "Yes..  we did. But I only did it because Natalia had some interesting news."

The Latina nodded and stood up. "I don't think we can trust Amyra."

I exchanged a worried glance with Amity. "What makes you say that?" I asked.

"Because.. She's a spy... I've been watching her.. She's getting letters from Leroy and sending some back." Natalia growled.

I blinked at her, not really sure how to respond. "But-"

"That makes no sense! She has no reason to betray us.. She's literally Audrey's best friend! You know, I wanna know where you were when I was named the acting queen when Luz was hurt." Amity hissed.

Natalia winced horribly. "I was-"

"Actually.. Yes, where were you?" Elizabeth asked. "You missed every single one of Amity's councilings."

"Oh. Well." Natalia eyes were wide as if she wasn't prepared to have evidence against her.

I glanced at Amity, she looked over at me and shrugged lightly.

"And besides. It's not like we can kick Amyra out. Her parents are one of the best medical staff in the whole kingdom, and the other is head guard. Best we can do is keep her away from the royal family if she is a spy.." Javier pointed out.

No.. They can't do that. Audrey is Amyra's best friend!

"Yeah, we're not doing that." I snapped. "Audrey is all Amyra has.. I'm not going to take that away from her. She's obviously stressed and just needs someone to talk to."

María glared at me. "It's not up to you. It's up to the council."

I could feel anger bubbling up inside. "Excuse me? I am the queen. I can do whatever I please.. I could take you off the council if I wished." I threatened.. I know it wasn't very.. Queen like.. But María had gotten on my last nerve!

María scoffed but quickly cleared her throat seeing Javier eyeing her.

"María your playing a very dangerous game insulting Luz like that." Nicholas murmured.

Amity sighed. "Well this was a waste of time." She grumbled.

I hummed in agreement. It really was..

Javier growled. "Luz, I'm sorry we wasted your time."

I shrugged. "It's fine.. Training time is just the only time I get to spend with Amity.." I muttered the last part to myself..

We both left the council room. I noticed that by now, the time I made out of my day to practice sword fighting with Amity was over.

"Amity, I have to-"

"I know.." Amity sighed. "War planning right?"

I nodded. "Yeah.. Lots of major stuff I have to get ready for.. Talk about irony, I became queen of a kingdom that was going into war." I muttered. I stared down at my runes, they were glowing... I haven't really thought about my runes in a while.

Amity turned to me. "Guess I'll see you tomorrow." She smiled weakly and gave me a quick kiss. "I have to get some things ready with you mother."

"Like what?" I asked.

Amity shrugged. "Just some minor things.. We're going to a big party that's being held by one of the council members..."

"Lucky. I'm stuck in war planning.. Which.. I suppose I shouldn't complain.. I'm keeping my kingdom safe.." I said, mainly talking to myself. I took a deep breath. "Alright. Guess I'll see you later." I nodded to her.

"Hey Luz."

"Yeah?"

Amity smiled at me lightly. "I love you."

I flinched. I wasn't expecting her to say that. It felt like a arrow had been shot through my heart and heat rose up to my cheeks.

"Heh.. Love you too Amity." I chuckled.

Amity gave a light wave before turning away and walking off.

I smiled "Man I love that girl."
