Trixie hummed as she washed her hair. After a long stressful day, it always felt amazing to practice some self care. If she was honest with herself, it had been a while since Trixie took some time for herself. She was far too busy. Sure, she washed her hair, took showers, and ate. But things such as sleeping for eight hours and eating right was hard. Between family and work, Trixie's hands were full. With some help from Katya, Trixie had began trying to have a better relationship with her parents. It was tiring but worth it, or at least Trixie had been telling herself that. Although, she didn't see how listening to her mother talk for three hours about buying a new bra, was worth anything. It brought a slight smile to Trixie's face though, even if she didn't say it. The sound of the doorbell snapped Trixie from her thoughts. She reached for the pink phone, looking at it. It was one in the morning. Trixie groaned as she grabbed her towel, wrapping it around her. Sure, it was late but Trixie's friends were known for popping up all willy nilly. Once at the door, Trixie looked out to see who it was. Katya. Trixie quickly opened the door, to see a crying Katya. Before she could say anything, Katya wrapped her arms around Trixie. "Baby, babe are you okay? What's wrong?"
"It's my mom and dad."
"Oh no, did something happened? Are they okay?"
"They are getting a divorce."
"Oh, baby come on." Trixie led Katya inside, closing the door behind them. "Do you want to talk about it?"
"I don't know."
"How about I make us some hot tea?" Trixie led Katya to the sofa, sitting her down. Katya pulled her legs close to her. Trixie softly kissed the top of her girlfriend's head and walked into the kitchen. As she put on the kettle, Trixie thought of ways to make Katya feel better. Even though she knew better than that. Trixie remembered what it was like when her parents decided to end it. So much yelling and just hate. Trixie hoped that Katya's parents would handle things better than her own did. "Katya , have you eaten?"
"Yeah."
"Okay good." Trixie couldn't help it. Even when Katya seemed at her lowest, she still wanted to make sure that the girl's basic needs were met everyday.
"Trixie?"
"Yes baby."
"Can you hold me, please?"
"Of course." Trixie poured two cups of tea, put in sugar, and walked back into the living room. "This is here if you want it."
"Thanks." Trixie sat down next to Katya, opening her arms. Katya happily took the invitation. She felt grounded when she was around Trixie. It was funny. Their relationship went from being unsure of what they had with each other, to building a safe space for each other. After a year of chasing one another in circles, it felt nice to just be still.
"You ready to talk about it?"
"My dad is here, at my aunt's house. He came for dinner."
"That is nice."
"I knew something was up. I talk to him everyday and he hadn't said anything about coming to see us. He said he wanted to surprise us but I knew he was lying. After dinner, I went outside and I asked. He told me that all the fighting was getting to be too much for him. I asked him, if it was my fault."
"Why would it be your fault?"
"Because I'm with you."
"That shouldn't matter." Trixie rubbed Katya's back, feeling a ping of even more sadness.
"I know that's what caused all the fighting. That is what pushed my dad to the edge."
"I mean I could see why. She missed your graduation because you are dating an older woman."
"Trixie, please don't get upset. You got upset enough already."
"I know, I just don't like it. I didn't like it then and I still don't. But you didn't come here to hear me get all upset, I'm sorry baby."
"It's fine." Katya held onto Trixie's arm, wanting to somehow be closer. "He said once he buys a house, Willam and I can move in with him."
"That's good right?"
"I guess."
"Do you not want to?"
"It would feel weird without mom."
"I know the feeling baby."
"What was it like for you? When your parents slipt?"
"Messy." That was the only word that could come to Trixie's head. It was hell on earth for both her and Farrah. Trixie was just 13 when her parents broke things off. She had to be there for Farrah, even if she herself didn't even fully understand what was happening or why. "They would fight like they didn't know each other, like they hadn't raised two children together. Thinking back on it, they never actually seemed to love each other. I think they stayed together as long as they did, for my sister and I. I hated them for the longest for breaking up, but my parents deserve happiness just as much as I do. And well, they just weren't making each other happy anymore. Could it have gone better? Yes, for sure but the pain would have still been there in the end." Trixie smiled softly at Katya, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. "I'm going to be here for you. If things get too much for you, you can always come here and stay however long you need. I know this is going to be hard." Katya load her head on Trixie's chest, listening to the pitter patter of her heart. It was smoothing, so peaceful. Katya loved knowing that Trixie's heart was hers and that it beat just for her. Katya was glad to have Trixie, now more than ever.
"I knew it was gonna happen at some point, I guess I just didn't want it to."
"And that is understandable, but hey don't think about it too much. I think you and I should get some sleep."
"That sounds nice. Trixie?"
"Yes doll?"
"Can we make plans for tomorrow?"
"Sure, what do you want to do?"
"Anything, as long as I'm with you." Trixie kissed Katya's forehead with a smile.
"Of course baby."
