"How are you doing kiddo?"
"I'm good dad, how are you and mom?"
"We are well. How is your sister?"
"Annoying."
"Awe, don't be so harsh. Are you liking your aunt Tempest?"
"She's cool, kinda odd though."
"Yeah, she has always been like that." Katya's dad chuckled as he closed his office door. "I miss you girls."
"We miss you too dad. Is mom still upset?"
"With me, yes. She says I need to learn to have her back when she makes a decision which lead to another argument."
"I'm sorry dad."
"Don't be, I want you and your sister to be happy. Are you happy Katya?"
"Yeah, it feels great to be back."
"No, I mean in general kiddo. I remember you asking me if love is worth pain. I was wondering if you had figured that out for yourself yet?"
"Oh that..I sorta just left it alone."
"Katya?"
"Yes dad?"
"How long can you bite your tongue before you notice the blood?"
"What?"
"How long do you plan on staying silent about how you feel?"
"Dad.."
"I can't tell you to talk to this person Katya but if you are unhappy by not being with them, then what do you have to lose? I think you should consider it."
"That's the thing dad, how do I know I'm unhappy without them?"
"You are."
"How do you know that?"
"I'm your dad, I just know these things."
"Okay Mr. Dad. But really, what if you are wrong?"
"I'm not, but if I am you can cry on my shoulder until your tears run dry and then I will still be there. You can even be mad at me all you want and I won't say a thing."
"You are so weird dad. I am gonna finish packing for the trip. I will talk to you tomorrow. I love you and tell mom I love her too."
"Of course, I love you too kiddo. Goodnight." Katya set her phone down beside her suitcase, sighing. It was crazy how she had barely said anything to her dad about how she was feeling and he could say the right things. Katya hadn't had a chance to talk to Trixie, just as she thought. The school trip was tomorrow and Katya was nervous. Sure, her and Trixie had said good morning in passing but that was it. Whenever Katya stopped by Trixie's classroom, she was never there. It felt like a game of cat and mouse. It really was starting to weigh on Katya and her friends had started to notice.
"Katya, can we talk?" Jan and Gigi stood behind Katya as she put her books in her locker.
"Sure, what's up?" Jan and Gigi looked at each other then at Katya.
"Well, we are worried about you."
"What? Why?"
"You haven't been yourself."
"You are not your happy and goofy self Katya."
"Yeah, you snapped at Crystal so that is a big red flag right there."
"I said sorry."
"We know but Katya we just want to check on you."
"I'm fine."
"But are you sure?" Jan put her hand on Katya's shoulder, rubbing gently. Katya smacked her hand away, swiftly turning around.
"Yes Jan, I'm sure. I am fine." Gigi crossed her arms and groaned.
"See Jan? I told you she was going to be like this. I don't know why you and other girls wouldn't listen to me."
"Yo..you guys talked about me behind my back?" Jan and Gigi looked down, avoiding Katya's piercing gaze.
"We just wanted to help you with your problems."
"What Gigi means to say is that we just wanted to know how to approach you to help. We wanted you to know that we are here for you."
"Well, you can start by not talking about my back about some problem that I don't have and then you can accept when I say that I'm freaking fine." Katya slammed her locker as she grabbed her bag. "Thanks for your concern but I don't need or want it." Gigi and Jan watched as Katya stormed off.
"I think that could have gone better?"
"Oh, you think?"
That was all Friday. Katya hadn't spoken to any of her friends since then. She didn't have anything to say to them. Yeah, sure they were trying help but Katya didn't ask for it. She didn't ask for anyone's help. She had accepted that it was her fault that her and Trixie weren't talking, that they weren't close anymore. It wasn't something that she was happy with but she could live with it. Katya paused when she saw something hanging out her red cheer bag. It was a pink sleeve. Katya pulled the sleeve and gasped when she saw what she was holding. It was one of Trixie's hoodies. The one that Katya always wore when she slept at Trixie's house. She stared at the oversized piece of clothing before hugging it, a small note falling out.
Hey little bird, you're in the shower right now, getting ready to go to home. I love having you here with me even though I hate seeing you get out of my bed. You look so at home in my bed, your hair covering my pillows, the sunlight hitting your face. I'm giving you this hoodie because it looks better on you than it has ever looked on me. I hope it reminds you of me on those nights that you aren't here for me to hold you. -Trixie
Katya slipped the hoodie over her head as she took a deep breathe. This was from the night that she went to Trixie's house in the pouring rain, about two months ago, after the fight with Violet. The last late night and early morning spent with Trixie. Katya remembered that she kept her cheer bag at Trixie's house from the night before. Tears fell from Katya's eyes as she held the note tighter. She missed Trixie so much. Why did she have to be so stupid?
