Chapter Twenty Seven

The trio now found themselves out of Tennessee and in the city of Chicago. A place that Maddie always wanted to visit growing up, she planned to travel once she was married and see the world as she had never left her small town, but of course, things didn't work out quite the way she expected. Stefan had already informed her about his run-in with Damon and Elena back when they found the werewolf pack and the girl was happy to know that at least he hadn't given up on them. But she worried for their safety, the closer they got the more danger Elena would be in if Klaus found out she was still alive. The only good thing about her time with Klaus was that she had been able to travel all around the country for the very first time, when the hybrid heard of her lack of travels he was appalled. He informed her that she could name any place and he had certainly been there, however he loved New Orleans the most out of everywhere in the entire world. The way he spoke about the nightlife, the music, the dancing, the overall vibe had her feeling excited for the first time in what felt like forever. He said that their current location was just as nice. But of course she knew they were not in the city to explore but rather get down to the bottom of why Klaus couldn't turn Hybrids. Maddie was nervous and hoped to god that he didn't find out Elena was still alive. As they walk into a bar that the two vampires used to visit in the twenties the girl smiles and wonders what it would have been like. 

"I can't believe this place is still here" Stefan states taking in the old building, however they are greeted with a woman who stares at them in shock

"you gotta be kidding me?"

"so a hybrid walks into a bar-"

"stop you Amy be invincible but that doesn't make you funny, I remember you" the woman states staring at Stefan 

"you're Gloria, shouldn't you be-"

"old and dead? if I die then who's gonna run this place?"

"Gloria's a very powerful witch" Klaus informs them 

"I can slow down the aging process with some herbs and spells but it'll catch up to me one day" the woman replies causing Maddie to smile hoping to be polite, she didn't wanna be on her bad side. As Klaus instructs her brother to grab the group a few drinks he does as told and the girl follows him and sits at the bar, her eyes looking around the small bar which defiantly had a lot of history to it. 

"I know why you're here, a hybrid out to make more hybrids? that kinda news travels" 

"so what am I doing wrong? I broke the curse"

"obviously you did something wrong, every spell has a loophole but a curse that old, we'd have to contact the witch who created it" Gloria states 

"well that would be the original witch, she's very dead" 

"I know and for me to contact her I'll need help, bring me Rebekah"

"Rebekah is a bit preoccupied" Klaus sighs 

"she has what I need bring her to me" 

"what is this?" Stefan interrupts, they all turn to face him and the girl squints her eyes focusing on the old picture he held in his hand which seemed to be of him and Klaus a long time ago. The girl's mouth drops in shock and watches as her brother's face contorts in confusion and horror. 

"I told you Stefan, Chicago is a magical place" 

"It doesn't make sense, why don't I remember you?"

"you said it yourself that time had a lot of dark holes" Klaus shrugs, Stefan walks out from behind the bar and moves closer to the Hybrid angrily 

"If you knew me then why haven't you said anything?" 

"well I'm a little busy right now, memory lane will have to wait"

"what the hell is going on, answer me" Stefan demands 

"let's just say we didn't get off to a brilliant start, to be honest, I hated you" he starts, he goes on to inform them about how Stefan showed up to a bar that Rebekah his younger sister and he frequented. Stefan was in his heavy blood-drinking days and made his way over to Rebekah where he would flirt with her shamelessly. Though the girl could tell Stefan was horrified and disgusted by Klaus's words Maddie couldn't help but appreciate the way he told stories about the past. He was very well-spoken and with his words she could almost picture it all happening. Though it all reminded her of how her life had been stolen from her by Katherine. She could have experienced the dancing and the music if only she hadn't have trusted an evil woman. Now as thoughts of the past run through her head the girl was feeling quite down as they entered a large storage facility with several coffins. Klaus walks over to one of the coffins and opens it revealing a woman dressed in outdated clothes who was desiccated with a knife sticking out of her chest. Maddie cringes at the sight and backs away as he pulls the knife out of her chest. 

"now love when my sister wakes up she will be ravenous so it be best for you to stay by my side" Klaus states casually, Maddie sends a look at her brother and nods wordlessly. 

"can you just tell me what the hell is going on here, obviously you want me here for a reason"

"well you have many useful talents, in fact, I learned many of my favorite tricks from you" he states causing the girl to shudder at the thought of her brother teaching someone already so horrible something worse. 

"since you don't believe that we knew each other I'm going to show you, you trusted me with one of your secrets and I'm going to prove it to you by going to your old apartment" Klaus states as they exit the storage facility leaving the poor man he compelled to be eaten by Rebekah when she awakes. Klaus takes the siblings to an older-looking apartment just like he said and they enter. However Klaus walks in and stops taking a look around the empty room and turns back to them.

"do you feel that? Is there anybody here?"

"Its been vacant for decades people must break in all the time" Stefan states calmly however the girl could tell instantly that there was something very wrong here. She sends her brother a questioning look and his eyes flicker from her to the pantry a few times causing her to frown. Suddenly she realizes that there was defiantly someone in the apartment who Stefan was terrified of Klaus catching. 

"why did you bring me here?" Stefan asks 

"your friend Liam Grant, the one who drank his wife's blood. I never could figure out why you wanted his name. Then you told me your little secret, it was all part of a special little ritual" 

"to write it down"

"and relive the kill over and over again" Klaus finishes, Maddie shutters at his words and backs away hoping to casually head towards the shelves without making him suspicious. However Klaus beats the girl to it and opens the door casually motioning for them to enter. 

"go on love, admire your brother's hard work" he encourages, she nods and enters the room and turns her head. She is instantly met with the terrified face of her best friend Elena Gilbert who seemed on the verge of tears. The girl's mouth drops in horror and she mouths to her friend 'stay quiet Klaus cannot know you're here'. Elena nods and the girl sends her a sad look before backing out of the room, she wipes her face of any emotion and Klaus smirks. Stefan steps forward and enters the room as well causing her breath to hitch.

"look what I found? 1918" he states before grabbing a bottle of alcohol and handing It to Klaus, Maddie lets out a breath of relief as he shuts the door ensuring that Elena would not be found.
