Chapter Thirty Eight

"William?" she asks in pure and utter shock 

"It's me, I'm here" he replies smiling at her happily, the girl reaches out and touches his hand and tears spring to her eyes at the feeling. His skin was cold but he looked the exact same as she remembered him on his last day. She wastes no time and propels her body into his arms holding him as her life depended on it. He laughs and wraps his arms around her closing his eyes in relief as after all this time he was finally able to hold her for real once more. Damon watches from his parked car as his baby sister clings onto the man she'd lost so horribly and smiled softly to himself, he puts the car in drive and leaves her alone to spend time with him. 

"I don't understand how are you here?" she asks pulling back slightly while still keeping herself in his arms

"I don't know what happened, I was in the other side watching over you like always and then all the sudden there was this door and I just stepped through it" he explains 

"so that was you this morning?" she asks and he nods shamefully 

"I can't believe I'm actually speaking to you, touching you. You have no idea how hard its been over there all alone" he replies before pulling her into another long hug, after a few moments they pull away and the girl grabs his hand holding it to her chest where the chain holding the ring he gave her remained. He smiles and picks it up examining it thoughtfully. 

"I never take it off, it makes me feel like you're always here with me"

"I have been" 

"what do you mean?"

"since the moment I died I've been watching over you from the other side. I saw your trip with Klaus and what he did to Stefan, I saw every breakdown and cried with you. you have no idea how hard it was to watch you cry over me when I was right there with you" he says as a stray tear falls down his face. 

"I'm so sorry" she cries 

"no don't be sorry its ok, I'm here with you now and we're going to make the most out of whatever time we have" he states grabbing her hand and holding it against his face, enjoying the touch of her skin which was warm unlike his. Maddie smiles and nods as they begin walking down the street aimlessly with his arm wrapped around her shoulder holding her close. Neither of them could believe what was happening right now, after so many nights of pure agony they finally had each other back thanks to a mistake Bonnie made. Neither minded however as they make their way to the forest where they'd be able to have a bit of privacy away from all the other people and ghosts. As they make it deep enough into the woods Maddie stops and stares up at him smiling widely once more. 

"I'm so proud of you" he comments making her laugh 

"for what?"

"for becoming the woman you are today, I've watched you grow with each day and no matter what you had to face you remained strong"

"I've been trying my best to keep it together so I appreciate that so much more than you know, Its just hard because feel like I'm the only semi-okay person in my group even though I'm really not. Sometimes I feel like Elena just acts like she's the only one with problems, lately, it seems like life revolves around her" she responds honestly 

"so you act like you're ok to make her feel better?"

"yeah sometimes" she shrugs 

"I'm sorry you have to do that, and I'm sorry you're not ok. I wish I was here physically to help you" 

"me too... William I-" before she can finish her sentence her phone ringing cuts her short, she sighs and answers It 

"Maddie?" Elena asks
