Today was the first day of senior year and Maddie was incredibly nervous, now with Klaus in the wind most likely creating new hybrids and Stefan with no humanity things were going to be interesting. Stefan had not spoken to her since he returned home and she had hardly seen him, not that she minded. She wanted nothing to do with him despite the fact that he was tasked to look out for her best friend and make sure her blood stay protected. But the girl didn't care, she wouldn't let any of this ruin her high school experience. Klaus had stolen enough of her time and now she was going to live her life as if she hadn't gone through many traumas over the past few months. She was going to be a new version of herself, one who was normal and uninvolved with the Vampire lifestyle. Elena had decided she wanted to do the same thing and as the two walked through the parking lot they send each other smiles. They meet up with Bonnie and Caroline and stand on the sidewalk observing their classmates who had no idea what had just gone on in these halls days prior.

"senior year"

"does anyone else think they should feel slightly more empowered?" Bonnie asks

"ok so prank night was a bust but we're accepting it and we're moving on!"

"you're right why should I let the fact that my boyfriend's seeing the ghost of his dead girlfriend hinder this experience?" Bonnie states

"yes and why should I let the fact that my boyfriend was turned into a hybrid ruin a fabulous day?"

"today's our anniversary, technically Stefan and I met on the first day of school last year" Elena comments, the girls turn to her and send her looks of sadness

"anything to add Maddie?" Bonnie asks

"how much time do you have?" the girl jokes before wrapping her arm around Elena's

"we can do this" Maddie states as they walk into the school as they hope that this year is normal.

Maddie stands at her locker staring blankly at her books as thoughts run through her head after Damon's phone call. He informed her that Rebekah would be staying with them since Klaus left her in the dust. She had no idea where their friendship stood nor if the girl would try to kill her when she returned back home. She sighs running her hands through her hair angrily knowing that she was going to have to deal with an original and her emotionless brother. She was especially dreading seeing her brother however, no part of her wanted to see the way he acted without his humanity. She knew that he wouldn't be himself and the worse things got the harder it would be to bring him back to himself. Just as she shuts her locker and turns to walk towards her math class she is met with the familiar face of her twin. She gasps in surprise and huffs before moving past him.

"wow come on don't ignore your twin" Stefan says as he catches up and walks next to her

"what are you even doing here?"

"well I'm tasked with babysitting Elena so I have no choice"

"good for you now can you please leave me alone?"

"why so cold? after all we are family"

"you are not my brother, you may look like him and sound like him but that means nothing to me. now move out of my way Stefan" she responds angrily

"on can do because guess who has math in five?"

"Jesus Christ I'm so sick of you already" she mumbles before walking into the classroom with Stefan hot on her tail. She sits down in the middle of the third row and places her things down, organizing them all the way she liked. She rolls her eyes as Stefan sits next to her with nothing but himself and stares at her.

"shouldn't you be watching Elena?"

"well yeah but you see I was given two different tasks, first is to watch over Elena and the second is to make sure you don't get hurt while living your normal human life. Obviously, Elena is the priority but I don't mind babysitting you, I've been doing it my whole life" he responds, the girl stares at him in shock and she is hurt by his words. She shakes her head and turns her face to the front of the classroom.

"you're an asshole"

"ok class lets start with attendance, we'll go down the line here uh Ana Johnson?" the teacher starts reading down the list. Maddie sits in silence waiting for her name to be called

"Madison Salvatore?"

"here" she responds

"Aright now Stefan Salvatore?"

"present"

"are the two of you related?" the teacher asks staring at them curiously

"yes sir we are, in fact she is my twin, younger by an hour" Stefan answers

"why you look nothing alike"

"yes we get that a lot considering only one of us got the charming good looks and the smarts" Stefan replies causing the class to gasp slightly at his insult to his once beloved sister. She stares at him in disbelief and her face reddens at his awful words. She always hated that she didn't look like anyone in her family, it made her feel like a freak. However the reason is because she was born to be held in a sacrifice to break a curse. Not only did he insult her looks but called her stupid, this was another thing she had been struggling with since waking up. She was forced to learn over a hundred years of education all within a month so that she could remain in the same grade as her friends. She worked her ass off and studied as hard as she could with whatever free time she got. Since women were not generally educated back in the day she was already further behind. However Maddie had never been dumb, in fact she was quite smart and loved to read in her time. She read nearly every single book she could get her hands on whilst hiding them from her father who would beat her if he found out she was attempting to educate herself. He knew that and he knew she was insecure about her differences but still chose to insult her in front of everyone. She had no idea how long she could put up with this fake version of her twin who already seemed to have broken her trust.

"he's kidding, we like to joke like that all the time" Maddie adds causing the teacher to laugh awkwardly before moving onto the next name on the attendance list.

"fuck you Stefan, seriously fuck you" she mumbles underneath her breath before bowing her head down and opening her notebook ready to take notes
