Chapter Thirty One

It had been hours since Maddie had awoken from passing out and Klaus was pissed. She had known him for a while and seen him freak out once before but this was much worse. Klaus found out where Elena was going to be that night which was preparing for the senior prank day at school along with the rest of their classmates and drove the truck and parked it right outside. The entire time she had watched Stefan take a horrific beating due to Klaus's anger, she was incredibly surprised that she had not a mark on her skin. But for some reason Klaus didn't seem upset with her, it was as if he shifted all of the blame onto Stefan. In order to protect him, she told Klaus that she was no innocent and she knew about Elena just like Stefan did hoping that she could possibly take some of the pain away from him but the hybrid only ignored her and snapped Stefan's neck another time. Rebekah had advised the girl to just sit back and keep her mouth shut so that he wouldn't kill her because she was in fact human and there was no coming back from a neck snap. It was very obvious that the blonde did not care about their current circumstances nor how she lied to her brother. Rebekah only wanted her necklace back. The hours go by incredibly slow as she waits for her brother to awaken. She had no idea what Klaus was going to do to Elena and knew she needed to get in there to help. But there was no way she could get past Rebekah. After what felt like years Stefan finally shoots up from the ground and stands to his feet taking in his surroundings. Maddie stands and places her hand on his arm sending him a worried look, he frowns and looks out the back of the truck realizing that they were parked outside of the school. He nods and turns to Rebekah.

"what happened?"

"you took quite a beating, Nic has been snapping your neck all afternoon"

"why did he bring us back to Mystic Falls?" Stefan asks trying to maintain innocence 

"you can stop playing dumb, it didn't take him long to figure out what you've been hiding"

"I'm not hiding anything, I've done everything Klaus has asked me to" 

"no you just failed to mention that the Doppelganger's still alive" Rebekah states, Maddie takes a deep breath trying to remain calm and prayed that he hadn't gotten to her yet

"where is Klaus anyway?"

"with any luck ripping that cows head off" 

"where is she?" Stefan asks as he charges Rebekah and pins her to the ground, however the girl instantly shoves him off and pins him to the truck holding him by his throat

"you really do love her don't you? consider me jealous" she states before stabbing him in the stomach and disappearing from sight. Maddie runs over to him and jumps out of the truck placing her hand on his shoulder and the other on the large chunk of metal lodged in his stomach.

"ok I'm gonna pull it out" she says before ripping it out as quickly as she can, Stefan grunts in pain and doubles overtaking a few deep breaths. 

"I'm sorry" she cries 

"don't be, now lets go find Elena" the two run into the school quickly searching the halls for any sign of Elena but come up empty. Stefan suddenly turns at the sound of a cry and starts running in the direction towards the gym. As they make it to the doors the twins share a look before opening the doors and gaining everyone's attention. 

"Klaus" 

"come to save your damsel mate?"

"we came to ask for your forgiveness and pledge our loyalty" Stefan replies staring at the man who sits calmly on the bleachers. Maddie looks over at Elena and gives her a nod as if to tell her that it was going to be ok and the girl sends her a teary-eyed one back. That's when she notices the unmoving body of Tyler Lockwood laying on the floor with blood surrounding his mouth and she gasps, this was much worse than she thought. 

"well you broke that pledge once already"

"Elena means nothing to me anymore, whatever you ask of me I will do" 

"fair enough, lets drink on it" Klaus says jumping down to the ground and walking over to two other classmates who Maddie remembered, they both lay crying on the ground anxiously. 

"kill them" Klaus instructs, Maddie steps forward and grabs Klaus by the arm forcing him to look at her 

"please Klaus I'm so sorry that we lied but don't make him do this" she begs, he only smirks and turns back towards her brother 

"what are you waiting for?"

"no Stefan don't, he's not gonna hurt me he already said that-" Elena starts, however she is cut off quickly by Klaus who backhands her and sends her to the ground. She cries and Maddie instantly runs over to her and pulls her into her chest holding her as she shakes. Stefan vamp speeds over to Klaus and attempts to attack him but the hybrid is too fast and grips his neck.

"she means nothing to you? your lies just keep piling up!"

"let her go I'll do whatever you want you have my word!" Stefan pleads 

"your word doesn't mean much, I lived by your word all summer during that time I never had to resort to this, stop fighting" Klaus states staring into his eyes and compelling him, Stefan falls limp against his hold and Klaus releases him.

"Klaus don't do this please" Maddie calls 

"I didn't want to love, all I wanted was his allegiance now I'm going to have to take it! you'll do exactly as I say when I say it, you will not run, you will not hide, you'll simply just obey" Klaus finishes, Stefan's face falls and he stares at Klaus for further instruction like a robot. Maddie holds her hand to her mouth covering it as she knew it was all over, they were going to die.
