Chapter Thirty Five

After Maddie dealt with Stefan during math she was delighted to see they had no other classes together and she was able to avoid him for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, that meant rather than bothering her he was gracing Elena with his charming presence. However due to the fact that the bonfire was that night the group decided that they would need to take action that night so that he could be distracted. They knew Stefan could not stay this way for much longer because it would be much harder to get him back. As the students flood the parking lot to attend the annual bonfire Elena, Maddie, Alaric, Damon, Caroline stand around the history classroom discussing their plan of action to distract no humanity, Stefan. Maddie felt bad for tricking her brother but he was becoming a menace and he needed to be taken down. 

"Maddie and I will lure Stefan away from the bonfire and then when he's distracted-" 

"I'll shoot him" Ric comments cutting Elena off, Maddie glances at the teacher in annoyance before turning her attention back to the group 

"why can't Bonnie just juju him or something?" Damon asks

"I'm trying to keep Bonnie out of this, I can't trust that Stefan won't hurt her" the doppelgänger responds causing them all to nod in understanding 

"Caroline are you covered?"

"yes I will make sure that the old Forbes jail cell is prepped and ready"

"you're forgetting a key player here, Rebekah?" Damon asks

"which is why its your job to keep her away" Maddie says causing her brother to frown

"how she's an original?"

"preoccupy her with your charm" Elena shrugs 

"might have better luck finding a dagger" Ric mumbles 

"you ever not gonna be mad at me Ric?"

"doubtful" 

"sorry I'm late" Tyler states before entering the room causally 

"we need you to raid your mom's vervain supply enough to keep Stefan down for a while" Elena instructs 

"you can't do that to Stefan"

"why not?" Maddie asks as her frustration levels begin to grow once more, what was with these men today? 

"trust me Tyler its in his best interest"

"well its not in Klaus's"

"but Klaus is the bad guy Tyler, why are you acting like some freaky hybrid slave minion?" Caroline asks her boyfriend who stares at them in confusion

"Klaus made me who I am Caroline, I owe him everything" 

"what is going on?" Maddie asks staring at the hybrid who they thought was on their side 

"I'm just gonna go" Tyler responds but as he turns his back Damon rushes forward and shoves needle full of vervain in his neck and watches as he falls to the ground.

"he's been sired, feels loyal to Klaus because Klaus's blood created him"

"how?"

"he'll seek acceptance from his master, really rare but maybe not so much in hybrids" Damon shrugs 

"how do we fix him?"

"get a new boyfriend" Damon responds

Elena and Maddie walk towards the massive crowd of drunk teenagers searching for Stefan so that way they could begin their plan to kidnap him and break the compulsion. They take a lap around the fire and spot Stefan talking to Rebekah who looked miserable by the keg. They share a look before moving towards them and picking up cups ignoring the two vampires' presence. Stefan looks at his sister in surprise as she pours herself a drink, she was never one to consume alcohol in fact due to their father who was constantly drunk she hated the substance. However as she fills her cup absentmindedly Stefan raises his eyebrows at her wondering why she would be going against something she always held close to her morals. 

"ladies hi, what are you doing?" 

"we're having fun Stefan, do you have a problem with that?" Elena asks before the girls clink their red solo cups together and drink their glasses in a single gulp.

"alright both of you take it down a notch, Elena you're a lightweight and Maddie you've never drank before so you need to be careful"

"really? you think we're gonna let a blood addict tell us how to drink?" the redhead snorts before refilling her cup once more, the two girls walk away leaving the older vampires speechless at their sudden boost of confidence. They find an empty corner and stand by a tree watching as one of their male classmate's drinks from the keg in a handstand whilst the crowd cheers for him. The girls laugh and cheer along with the rest when Elena stops and stares off into the distance with a longing look. Maddie follows her eyes and finds her twin leaning against a tree a few meters away staring at them with a smirk. Elena raises her glass and takes a sip watching as Stefan does the same without breaking eye contact. The girls turn away from him and carry on faking a conversation so that he would think they were just trying to be normal and party. However suddenly Stefan appears behind them and Elena jumps.

"whats that look?" 

"what look?"

"well Damon's got his flirt on and you're jealous" Stefan states and Maddie turns to her friend raising her eyebrows 

"I'm not jealous"

"Its alright be jealous by all means, I'm sure Damon would be thrilled" 

"I'm not jealous Stefan!" Elena snaps 

"my mistake" he replies holding his hands up in defense 

"whatever I'm out of here" Elena replies before leaving the twins alone, Maddie glares at her twin 

"great job asshole" she states before running after her friend, both girls walk over to the benches in front of the football field and smirk as they knew Stefan was following not too far behind. Elena lays down on one of the bleachers and Maddie leans against the railing as she truly was beginning to feel sick from the alcohol. However she needed to play it up for Stefan. Moments later the man himself approaches them with an annoyed look on his face. 

"I used to know every constellation, how did I forget them all?" Maddie asks curiously as she slurs her words slightly 

"you're both drunk I need to get you both home"

"fine, I need to find my car" Elena states as she stands to her feet and slips off of the railing, she giggles as she catches herself and Maddie covers her mouth pretending to laugh along with her. 

"you're joking right"

"uh oh its the fun police" Maddie scoffs

"yeah I thought ripper Stefan was supposed to be the life of the party?" Elena states 

"alright I'm driving you home come on" he replies walking down a few of the steps, Maddie follows him occasionally tripping but makes it to her brother who stares at her in utter frustration. Elena however just like their plan does not follow and instead begins climbing the railing. Maddie watches and giggles at her friend uncontrollably.

"Elena" she laughs causing the brunette to laugh as well

"what are you five get down" Stefan commands as the girls giggle 

"why, are you afraid that 'I'm gonna fa-" she is cut off by slipping off of the raining slightly and catches herself before laughing once more 

"that was close Klaus would not be happy with you"

"you're hilarious" he fake smiles 

"look Maddie no hands!" the girl smiles as she lets go of the railing nearly falling but making sure to catch herself once more, Maddie laughs again as Stefan begins to get worried. However her grip fails her and she falls off of the bleachers but before she can reach the ground Stefan catches her holding her tightly in his arms. Maddie snorts and runs over to them still playing the drunk girl character. 

"Elena you could have died" she laughs, before Stefan can reply he is shot in the back several times with the vervain darts by Rick and falls to the ground. Maddie wipes the smile off of her face and kneels down next to her twin making sure he was out and nods.
