Chapter ten

After Maddie left Katherine and Stefan talked a bit more and she, of course, surprised everyone by revealing that she'd been drinking vervain for years so it didn't affect her anymore. She made a great escape and the group was left with nothing as they head to the barbecue the city was throwing. Damon was there so he could get in close with the sheriff and the council, Stefan and Elena had a big fight planned so that way Katherine would think they were broken up and leave everyone alone, and Maddie had quite literally nothing to do but watch. She wanted to be involved somehow but she knew that her brothers would do anything to prevent her from it, but she was just as stubborn if not more than them, it ran in her blood. The girl spots her brother standing by the parking lot with his arms crossed and his normal broody look on his face, he was staring at Mason Lockwood, the new werewolf in town that Damon had already managed to piss off. She gulps and briskly walks over to him wrapping her arm around his, he looks down at her in confusion before pulling away and heading towards the older man but not without her following quickly in suit.

"Stefan and Maddie right? the other Salvatores"

"nice one, I wanna offer you an apology" Stefan states with a small smile on his face, the girl instantly relaxes as the words come out of his mouth. She was worried he would do something stupid but she should have known that wasn't who Stefan was, he had never been reckless. Rather than accepting the apology, Mason shakes his head as he leans against his truck

"not interested"

"look my brother acted impulsively"

"you think?"

"if you and Damon keep at each other's throats somebody innocent is gonna get hurt and I don't want that. Your family lives here so I don't think you want that either, so what do you say we just quit the whole alpha male thing and call it a truce?" Stefan asks

"I made that same offer to your brother and he turned it down with a knife"

"he made a mistake and we're here to make sure that it doesn't happen again to either one of you" Maddie responds in a soft tone, she genuinely felt bad for her brother's behavior and was upset he would go after a man for no reason. She hated conflict and wanted it all to end. The girl ignores Stefans look and sends Mason a smile.

"tell your brother to watch his back" Mason comments bending down slightly, shudders run through her body as the much taller man glares into her eyes. After a few seconds, he pulls away and turns before Stefan grabs his arm.

"I'm guessing he only has to worry about that during a full moon otherwise, you're not as strong right? You would have killed Damon by now. Think about it there's one of you and two of us, you're the one who needs to watch his back" Stefan replies calmly

"if he comes at me-"

"he won't" the girl interjects, neither of the two men tears their eyes off of each other, and for a few moments, it's silent. Mason finally nods and shakes Stefan's hand sending Maddie a nod before stalking off. Stefan turns back to his sister with a glare on his face not bothering to flinch as Damon appears wrapping his arm around her shoulder.

"Maddie what did we say about getting involved?"

"I wasn't gonna let you go over to him alone!"

"I can handle myself, its you that we need to worry about" Stefan replies softly, the girl nods and looks up to her oldest brother
