Chapter nine

Maddie was adjusting as best she could, though her hair was now short she loved to wake up early and coming up with a new style to try. She loved experimenting with her hair and doing all sorts of crazy styles with it, according to her brothers it was ok for her to do whatever she wanted. She loved her hair when it was straight like Elena's but her favorite look remained the original curls she always had back in the day. It was something that helped her feel closer to her past. She had just finished with her hair when Stefan enters her room holding something behind his back, she watches him curiously as he takes a seat on her bed clearly deep in thought. 

"are you going to just sit there or will you inform me what you're thinking about?"

"I still can't believe you're here, after all this time I still can't wrap my head around it"

"well get used to it Stefan because I will be here with you forever"

"I'm glad"

"now what in the world are you hiding behind your back?" 

"well after we thought you died in the tomb I went home and I found this before Lexi and I left town, I've kept it with me ever since because it reminded me of you. It's brought me comfort when I needed it most and I think that you should have it now" he says pulling out the old stuffed animal her mother had made for her when she was just a child. The girl's eyes brighten as she takes it from his hands holding it against her chest, she smiles and holds it to her nose just as she used to, instantly smelling the scent of her old home. 

"Bary" 

"I thought you might like to have him back"

"thank you Stefan!" she says jumping up and pulling him into her arms, before sitting back on the bed watching as her brother turns to leave the room

"Stefan you may look the same to everyone else but to me, you've changed"

"what do you mean?"

"you've lost the light that used to be in your eyes"

"well I've done a lot of bad things in my time Maddie"

"brother you are not a bad person, you must not allow your prior mistakes to prevent you from true happiness, you deserve that much"

"you've been asleep for a long time, if you knew what I've done you would hate me too. I'm a monster"

"no I wouldn't, you are my brother and I know you better than you know yourself,  and you are no monster"

A few days after Caroline's attack things were still crazier than ever, Katherine was back and her new favorite game was impersonating Elena, she went as far as to kiss Damon after they returned from a long day at Duke University searching for answers about her bloodline. Maddie is awoken by a loud bang and stands gripping the stake she keeps by her bedside tightly, she creeps into Stefan's room to find Elena on the floor, who turns and smirks at her and the girl's blood runs cold, this wasn't Elena.

"Katherine"

"Madison its great to see you after all this time!" she says standing and pulling her into a hug, but Maddie only shoves her away as Stefan moves in between the two so he could protect her in case anything went down.

"easy big brother I'm not gonna hurt her we're friends in case you forgot" Katherine says taking a seat on his bed

"I'd hardly call you a friend Katherine, in case you forgot I was forced into a tomb for over 164 years!" 

"stop dwelling" 

"why are you here?" Stefan asks 

"I missed you Stefan"

"see I can't quite get that down its just kinda stuck in my throat"

"well it's the truth, deep down inside that gorgeous body of yours is the Stefan that fell in love with me too" Katherine says running her finger down his chest, the girl crinkles her nose in disgust and decides that now is her time to go as she figured Stefan would be down anytime now carrying her vervain body to the dungeon. As if on cue the man himself walks through the halls with her in his arms and brings her to the dungeon where he chains her arms and legs as she moans in pain breathing heavily.

"so where were we? that's right you were gonna tell me why you're here" Stefan says crossing his arms as the two stares at her eyebrows raised

"I'm here for you"

"stop lying!"

"is it so hard to believe? do you not remember the founder's day ball? that night? I never compelled you Stefan it was all real" Katherine says 

"well whatever feelings I had are long gone and replaced by many layers of hate"

"don't worry I'll bring it back" she says, Stefan then turns and walks out of the room leaving the two girls alone

"why are you here, I know it's not for him so don't even try"

"wow you've changed, the Madison I knew never would have been so bold"

"its Maddie, and you would know if you had gotten me out of the tomb yourself like you said" she says angrily

"well I was planning on it, but Damon beat me to it"

"Katherine please tell me what's going on, I know something is coming"

"I don't know what you're talking about, maybe it was all that sleeping that made you so slow"

"I will find out the truth"

"you may not like it"

"if you have anything to do with it then I'm certain I'll hate it" 

"ouch" Katherine says pouting, the woman was surprisingly hurt by both of the twin's words, she had always loved Stefan but with Maddie it was different. Even after she found out about what she was the girl never strayed and continued to be her friend, she was the only person who Katherina Pierce genuinely felt guilt for, she never wanted to hurt her. But now more than ever they had to be careful because the girl knew that if Klaus got word of the girl's existence then he would be in Mystic Falls instantly. Not only would he kill Madison Salvatore but he would also kill Elena not that she cared about her distant relative and doppelgänger but the reveal of her existence could lead to Klaus discovering Maddie's statues, that she was in fact not dead. This was all a giant mess that she had to come back and solve with all odds stacked against her.
