Chapter Thirty Six

While Elena runs over to her car and opens the trunk Maddie carries her brother's feet while Rick carries his upper half. The girl grunts and clenches her teeth as they quickly move over to the car before anyone could see them. She and Rick set him down in the trunk and Elena gets in the front seat bucking herself up ready to take off. Maddie closes the trunk and hops in the back doing the same before reaching forward and grabbing Elena's shoulder comfortingly, the brunette places her hand on Maddie's and rubs It softly. This was a hard thing to do for both of them, Stefan was the most important person in both of their lives and they would do anything necessary to save him. Even if it meant drugging and kidnapping him to dry him of the blood and break the compulsion Klaus had him under. Before Rick can get in the car a sudden burst of fire erupts outside of the car before catching the bottom of it on fire. Rick screams for the girls who scramble to unbuckle their seatbelts and open their doors to escape, however the door was stuck. Both girls try their best to open it but neither would budge. Maddie curses as it grows hotter in the car and turns back to her brother who was still knocked out. Elena attempts to kick the windshield out but nothing works. As Rick hits the windows with the end of a lacrosse stick Maddie jumps and turns back to her brother once more knowing that he was the only way they could get out of here. Maddie climbs in the back of the car coughing loudly as smoke fills their air, Elena does the same and both girls sit next to Stefan as he wakes looking around trying to figure out what was going on. Maddie found herself seeing stars as the smoke made its way into her lungs cutting off all of her oxygen. She tries to stay awake but her body was shutting down. As darkness begins to take over her body falls limp against the back window. She watches with blurry vision as Stefan kicks the door off of the car and lays his head back down as the vervain was still affecting him. Rick runs over and quickly helps Elena out of the car before the two carry Stefan out, Maddie reaches her hand forward wheezing as the smoke burns her lungs and the heat burns her skin. Just before she falls into a darkness she watches as Elena and Rick grab her and pull her out of the car just before It blows up.

"give it to me I'll do it" Maddie states as she attempts to grab the burn lotion from her oldest brothers hands 

"no stop"

"Damon-"

"Madison let me help you" he states staring at the girl who had a large burn mark on her arm, she nods and allows him to rub the lotion against her painful skin. He had already tended to Elena and once his sister woke up he was relieved she was ok and wanted to help her. 

"this reminds me of old times, me helping you after dad..." 

"I never thanked you for that Damon" 

"you don't have to thank me, I was doing my job" 

"well I appreciate it more than you'll ever know. you and Stefan always took better care of me than dad ever did" she sighs as she remembers her twin's current state

"we'll get him back Maddie I promise"

"what if he's too far gone?" she asks 

"then he keep working until we bring him back" he replies putting the cap back on the lotion and setting it on the counter. Maddie smiles softly at her brother before making her way over to him and kissing his cheek. 

"you're a good man Damon, I'm sorry that I ever questioned that" she states before walking away from him. She walks up the steps hoping to head to her room and get some rest after an excruciatingly long day. She honestly felt like the last time she slept soundly was when she was in the coma Katherine forced her into. Before the girl can make it to her room she bumps into her twin who had recovered from their vervain attack and attempts to push past him. However he follows her and leans against her doorframe as she unmakes her bed. 

"you got quite the burn, you feeling ok?" 

"I thought you didn't care"

"I don't just being polite" he shrugs and the girl stares down at her pillow sadly 

"what do you want Stefan, in case you didn't know I've had a long ass day and I don't really want to deal with your shit"

"never in my life did I think I would get to hear you curse if only dad could see you now"

"stop trying to talk to me like nothing is wrong when literally every single thing is fucked" she yells, Stefan watches as she returns back to her task of unmaking her bed trying not to cry.

"Elena thinks I can find my humanity again" he comments causing her to look up at him

"she's right you can"

"after everything I've done you me around?"

"yes of course I do Stef, you're my brother and I love you. seeing you this way kills me"

"do you have any idea how pathetic that makes you?" he asks walking over to her with a smirk, the girl reaches behind her casually holding onto the wooden stake Damon had given her and waits for him to approach her.

"I know you better than anyone else in the entire world Stefan, we shared a womb together. I know you think this is the best way to live but I promise you it isn't, the longer you pretend you're not miserable the worse its gonna be when you snap out of it"

"what if I don't wanna snap out of it?" he asks 

"then I'll fix you myself" she responds before plunging the stake into his stomach causing him to scream in pain as he falls to the ground. Damon vamp speeds into her room and stares at her sadly as tears fall down her cheeks because of what she was just forced to do. He had just made her so upset and everything he'd done caused her to lose her temper. Stefan stares at her in shock before ripping the stake out of his skin and walking out of the room without another word. Maddie covers her mouth in shock and her eldest brother is quick to pull her into his arms.

"Its ok sister he defiantly deserved it"
