Chapter Forty

Elena and Maddie were able to leave Ric's apartment just in time for school and walked through the parking lot side by side both of them searching for the original who seemed to be fitting in quite well. The girl had only seen Rebekah once as she was leaving to attend a hang-out session with her new dance team friends since she'd moved into her house. Maddie had no idea what her doppelgänger friend was planning but she was sure it wasn't going to be good which is why she decided to tag along and make sure Elena didn't get her head ripped off. Maddie loved Elena like a sister but sometimes she overestimated herself and walked around high and mighty but that attitude is what got her in tricky situations which everyone would have to stop their lives to help solve. Recently it seemed like it was Elena's world and the rest were just living in it. But Maddie knew how Rebekah worked, they hadn't spent much time together but the girls had connected on a certain level and held understanding. As they approach the football field Maddie pushes past her friend and walks over to the blonde original with a smile.

"hey Rebekah long time no see"

"yeah sorry I've been busy trying to learn about the new world, it's quite odd" she responds 

"don't worry about it I'm glad things are going well for you, I mean you seem to be fitting right in"

"yeah I'm trying my best" she smiles before turning to Elena and rolling her eyes 

"you goodie" 

"I was hoping we could talk" Elena states getting right to the point

"about what? Stefan, don't worry I'm over him. In fact, you should probably take a page out of my book if we're being honest" 

"actually I'd rather talk about this" Elena replies holding up a photo Ric took of Rebekah's name carved on the cave walls, the girls watch as her cocky smirk falls from her face as she stares at the photo blankly.

"I'm curious why you and Klaus have spent one hundred years running from your father" 

"I should get back to the girls, homecoming is around the corner" 

"maybe I'll ask Mikael when I wake him" Elena states crossing her arm, Maddie turns and looks at her friend angrily wishing that she could have just let her handle it without creating this weird power struggle thing the girls had going on. 

"you're bluffing you don't know where he is"

"so then who's rotting in that old cemetery in Charlotte?" Elena asks 

"If you wake Mikael we are all doomed" 

"so then tell me"

"why do you wanna know?" Rebekah asks glaring daggers into the brunettes soul 

"why don't you want me to wake him?"

"I need to get back to the girls" the blonde states before turning and walking away leaving them alone, Maddie instantly turns to Elena with her arms crossed and glares at her 

"what the hell was that?"

"I tried to get the information from her" Elena shrugs 

"yeah great job now we're back where we started and you just pissed off an original, thanks for letting me handle it" Maddie replies angrily before walking towards the school leaving her friend wide-eyed at her outburst. This was the exact part of Elena Gilbert that had been getting on the girl's nerves. She wished that for once she would just relinquish control and let someone else take over but no, everything had to be about her and done the exact way she wanted it. Now the redhead was stuck in the middle of this weird power struggle between her two friends and it was weird as hell. Maddie shrugs off her anger and plasters a fake smile over her face as she greets Caroline at her locker, she was determined not to let Elena ruin her day anymore.

"well you better make sure that your power struggle doesn't get your spine snapped" Damon states as he talks to Elena on speakerphone from the old Forbes jail cell. He had convinced his sister to come down and take a look at Stefan after noticing how frustrated she was with the doppelgänger. She really had no desire to see her brother with no humanity but it was better than Elena at this moment. 

"I can do this Damon, she's afraid of him. If we can find a way to kill Klaus then Stefan will be free of the compulsion" Elena replies causing Maddie to roll her eyes, her brother hangs up the phone, and the two peer into the room where their brother sits tied up against the chair looking absolutely miserable. 

"I know you're frustrated with her but just try to look at where she's coming from on all this" Damon comments 

"I know exactly where she's coming from its just that this could have been over If she would have let me talk but she had to make things about her like she always does and it's annoying" 

"thats fair" Damon shrugs before opening the door and allowing his sister to walk in first who gains the attention of Stefan instantly 

"If you three are gonna keep me locked up in here for the next decade can we at least skip the routine visits?"

"you know I'm not a bug supporter of this whole Lexie recovery plan, Elena thinks this place is gonna weaken you out, break you down and make you feel again" Damon replies 

"we should all listen to Elena right, I mean her plans work out so well, don't they? why are you here?" Stefan asks staring at his sister 

"what are you talking about?" she asks 

"Its family day in vampire rehab, can't we visit our beloved brother?" Damon asks smirking 

"go away"

"nah I thought we could all hang out, a little family bonding time" he heaven haired man states sarcastically, Maddie moves from her spot next to the door and walks over to her twin who she had missed terribly, she wished she could tell him everything he'd missed including her visit with William but this man didn't care. She bends down to his level and looks at him in the eyes. 

"how are you Stef?" she asks softly 

"you know Klaus may want to keep Elena alive that doesn't mean she's safe with Rebekah" he states changing the subject, the girl rolls her eyes and stands to her feet moving over to the wall and leaning against it.

"lier lier pants on fire, Klaus compelled you to protect Elena and if you thought that for even a second that she was in danger you would work a lot harder" Damon states 

"agh you got me" Stefan smiles 

"yep"

"congratulations you can go now" he replies, Maddie frowns at his words and tries her best not to take them to heart, reminding herself that this was not her brother but some weird messed-up version of him. 

"you really have given up haven't you?" Maddie asks sadly 

"actually this is my happy face" he responds fake smiling back at her, Damon walks over to their brother and stares down at him nodding sadly before ripping the chains and restraints off of him. Her mouth drops in shock as he backs away grabbing her hand and putting his body in front of hers just in case he tried anything.  

"what are you doing?" Stefan asks 

"screw this Lexie plan we could all use a drink" Damon states before leading them out of the jail cell
