Chapter Fifty

Once Maddie got home she refused to spare either of her brothers another glance as she hurried through the house and up the steps. She had no idea if Damon was aware of what Stefan had done or if he'd been in on it the whole time, either way she only wanted to be left alone. Klaus walked her home and kindly healed her wounds all while somehow talking her down whilst in the middle of a panic attack. She could not express how much it meant to have someone sit down and genuinely listen to her as she spoke her mind, he did not interrupt nor did he judge. Klaus only listened. She told him about how ever since Katherine had entered their lives both of her brothers were taken with the doppelgänger, they fell quickly and over time she became their sole focus. When she awoke the same happened with Elena, somehow another member of the Petrova family line had managed to pull her brothers in and make their world revolve around her. Maddie didn't honestly believe that her brothers would fight for her the way they fought for Elena Gilbert. Even in his own twisted way Stefan was still doing his best to save Elena from being a personal blood donor for Klaus. She explained that her feelings were most likely just jealous and unfair to her friend but she couldn't help but feel like they cared more for her. Klaus understood her feelings and assured her that blood was more important than anything in the world and if they didn't see that then it was their own stupidity. Maddie vented her inner thoughts all the way to her house and not once did Klaus make her feel unheard. She was incredibly thankful to him for allowing her to speak freely, she had nobody who would listen in that way anymore, as it used to be William. After bidding Klaus goodbye Maddie went straight to bed as her body was mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted from the days events. She slept soundly through the night, thankfully she wasn't plagued with nightmares, just sleep. When Maddie woke up the next morning she was surprised to see a text message from Klaus and opens it, 

'get ready I'll coming over in ten'

Her eyes widen as she realizes that the text was sent twenty minutes prior and jumps out of bed and throws on a baggy oversized shirt and some jeans along with her converse. She brushes through her hair quickly and ties it in a low pony tail leaving a few strands out to shape her face and brushes her teeth. She runs downstairs to see the man himself sitting on the couch reading one of the history textbook she left on the coffee table. He turns hearing her enter and smiles.

"ah Maddie did you know that most of this information in your textbook is incorrect?" 

"Klaus what are you doing here?" she asks walking over to him, she knew her brothers were not at the house as they were off plotting against the very man she was talking to in the witchy house.

"I thought that while you're friends are plotting against me I mine as well spend the day with the only Salvatore who hasn't betrayed me"

"If you want information about what they're doing I can't help you, they've kept me out of all their plans, they don't trust me anymore" she says crossing her arms 

"actually that is not what I had planned, in fact why don't I show you?" he asks standing up and putting the textbook down, she follows him out of the house and to the front where a brand new black suv Porsche Cayanne sat. She raises her eyebrows at him in confusion and he chuckles and wraps his arm around her shoulder bringing her closer.

"this is your new car" he says casually handing her the keys, the girl's mouth drops and she stares at him in surprise not believing his words 

"what?"

"I had one of my hybrids pick it up for you" he shrugs 

"Klaus what do you mean, you can't just give me a car"

"why not? isn't that what friends do, give gifts?" 

"not gifts that are worth more than my life!" she responds 

"well I wanted to go big, its not everyday I come across someone who I've wronged in the past that doesn't want to kill me"

"thank you so much but I can't accept this" she says handing the keys back to him

"love, I insist" 

"why?"

"why does there have to be a reason? can't I just do something nice for you?" he asks placing his hand on her back and leading her over to the drivers side, he opens the door for her and gestures for her to get in the car. She sighs and gets in and takes the keys back holding them in her hands, she'd seen all of her friends drive and she had a basic idea of what to do. Klaus gets in the passengers seat and buckles his seatbelt before turning to her.

"first thing you need to do is adjust your mirrors, the side mirrors should be moved so you can see whats on either side of the car and the review mirror should show you whats behind you" he explains, she nods and follows his directions using the buttons on the side to move them to her liking and after quite a few minutes she decides her visibility was perfect. 

"now I want you to look down at the pedals, the one on the right is the gas and the one on the left is the brake. go ahead and familiarize yourself with those" he instructs, she nods and places her foot on the gas and brake several times.

"now do you see the thing next to your wheel? thats called the turn signal, you'll press it down to signal left and up to signal right ok?" he asks, she repeats what he'd just said in her head and nods understanding him.

"alright now thats pretty much all there is to it, now we just drive" 

"Klaus I don't know about this, what if I crash?" she asks nervously as she wipes her sweaty palms on her pants

"you won't crash" he responds simply 

"how do you know?"

"I trust you" he shrugs and she stares at him blankly 

"Maddie go ahead and turn the key all the way and start the engine" she does as told and turns it on and looks in her mirrors to make she that nobody was near for her to accidentally hit

"now you grab this and drag it down to where it says d" he says watching as she follows his instructions,

"ok now see this lever? its your e -brake and you never want to drive with it on and you should always set it when you park, so go ahead and push It down"

"ok" she says 

"great now check your mirrors and once you feel ready go ahead and press the gas softly and take us down the road" he replies, she nods and frowns biting her lip in concentration. She checks it all of her mirrors and takes a deep breath before taking her foot off the brake and gently pressing on the gas, the car lurches forward and she gulps glancing over at Klaus who nods at her in reassurance. She presses on it once more moving slowly down the driveway, when she gets to the end of it she stops and pushes down on her turn signal hoping to turn left and checks both ways before turning onto the road slowly. Once she clears the turn she smiles realizing that she was driving on a road for the first time

"how do you feel?" he asks 

"great!" she laughs 

"ok why don't you go a bit faster then?" he asks noticing her current 25mph speed, she nods and presses harder down on the gas making the car go 45 mph. She follows the curves of the road easily. 

"are you comfortable?" 

"Yeah I am" 

"listen there's another reason why I brought us out here today"

"whats that?"

"I wanted to apologize for my part in what happened last night"

"its not your fault, It's Stefans"

"he did it to get back at me"

"well he's an asshole who only cares about himself"

"I'm sorry it happened"

"Me too" she says softly 

"why don't we see how fast this thing can go?" Klaus asks, watching as a smile breaks onto her face.
