Chapter Thirty Two

Elena and Maddie sit side by side as they watch Stefan devour the boy as if his life depended on it. Though the girl had seen it many times over the summer she never got used to it like Klaus said she would. But she knew that right now she needed to be strong for her friend because clearly Stefan was no longer going to help them. She was now the only thing in-between Klaus and Elena. She hoped that since Klaus had decided not to harm her when he found out the truth meant she could possibly convince him to let them go. After all, she was just as complacent as Stefan yet he acted as though she did nothing. They had developed a friendship over their few months together, but more importantly an understanding. She hoped that he wouldn't throw all of that away just for a curse. Maddie holds Elena's shaking hand in her own trying to give her some sort of comfort as Klaus bends down beside the two of them.

"always nice to see a vampire in his true element, the species as become such a broody lot"

"you did this to him" Elena replies angrily 

"I invited him to the party he's the one dancing"

"where is it? where is my necklace?" Rebekah yells as she enters the cafeteria angrily approaching Elena 

"what are you talking about?"

"she has my necklace" Rebekah states showing Klaus a photo on her phone

"well well more lies"

"where is it?" the blonde asks again

"I don't have it anymore"

"you're lying!" Rebekah screams pushing past her brother and moving to attack Elena, Maddie is quick to move in front of the girl and allow the blonde to sink her teeth into her neck brutally tearing apart the skin. Klaus instantly steps forward and shoves his sister back away and Maddie holds her bleeding neck as Elena holds onto her body supporting her. 

"knock it off!" Klaus roars 

"make her tell me where it is Nic"

"where is the necklace sweetheart, be honest" Klaus states 

"I'm telling the truth Katherine stole it"

"Katerina of course, well that's unfortunate. If we had the necklace it would make things so much easier for your witch but since we're doing this the hard way let's put a clock on it shall we? 20 minutes, if Bonnie hasn't found a solution by then I want you to feed but this time I want you to feed on Elena, you know you want to" Klaus states staring at Stefan who's eyes had glossed over with anger and defeat. 

"Klaus please don't do this to him" Maddie struggles out as she stands to her feet, he gives her a look of sympathy momentarily but it fades quickly as he turns back to Stefan

"no one leaves, she tries to run fracture her spine" Klaus replies motioning to Elena as he exits the gym. Stefan begins to pace anxiously and Maddie holds a towel she'd found on the ground to her open wound hoping that Stefan wouldn't think much about it. 

"Caroline's dad, Stefan he was able to resist compulsion. I don't know how but he did it, maybe its possible"

"right yeah like Its an easy normal thing to do, all it takes is years of training"

"Stefan you're in control of this just drink from me" Elena suggests causing Maddie to facepalm at her stupid words 

"you don't get it I can't stop Elena I'm a ripper! a ripper doesn't stop! I listen to the words that come out of your mouth and all I hear is the sound of your heart pumping blood from your body. when that clock tics down I'm going to have to feed on you, wanna know what's worse? I'm not gonna be able to stop"

"I don't believe that, you can fight it you're strong enough!"

"why because I love you?"

"yeah that's right Stefan because you love me! you'll fight because after everything we've been through you owe me that!" Elena states as tears fill her eyes 

"you're right because I owe you everything, through all of this you were the one thing thats kept me from giving up, from turning it all off" Stefan replies as he gets closer to the girl he loved, Maddie smiles at her brother's words and her heart breaks as she knew that no matter what they weren't going to win. 

"I can't help what I am, the blood that I get the more that I want and if I get near yours, you are dead" 

As the clock continuously ticks down Maddie begun to grow more and more anxious. She knew that they were going to have to run no matter what Klaus had said. She also knew that if she were to go with the doppelgänger she might be able to delay Stefan a bit for her to get away. But she was certain this was not going to work unless Stefan fought against the compulsion because he would be able to reach them in less than a second and kill Elena. As it reached ten seconds Maddie begins to pull Elena's arm towards the door and the girl looks at her as if she was crazy. Stefan was holding himself back as sweat drips down his face. Maddie knew that this was it, they had no other options. 

"Elena we have to run"

"but Klaus said-"

"If you stay it won't matter" Stefan states 

"Elena please please" Maddie begs as she pulls her but the girl only resists 

"there is another way Stefan its for you to fight" Elena replies just as the timer goes off, Maddie watches in horror and stares at her brother who screams in pain

"fight Stefan" 

"Elena enough of your bullshit we have to run right now!" she states before pulling her into a sprint, they make it out of the gym and continue as quickly as they can but both jump as they could hear Stefan nearing them. He was shoving himself against the lockers and walls to delay reaching his love but he knew that it would only work for so long. They push past the closed doors only to run straight into Klaus who grips them both with a smile.

"we've got to stop meeting like this"
