Chapter Forty Seven

"Stefan?" Maddie calls as the girls walk down the steps and into the basement which seemed to be empty, they share a look before turning to see the exact person they were looking for around the corner.

"go away you guys shouldn't be here"

"Stefan we need your help, Bonnie said that you would be here" Elena says stepping forward 

"Bonnie sucks at keeping secrets"

"brother you need to give Klaus his family back" Maddie says sternly, she watches as he rolls his eyes and leans and moves closer to them trying to look intimidating but he didn't scare her one bit.

"oh really is that what I need to do?"

"yes because you and your dumb revenge plot Klaus tried to kill Jeremy but ended up getting Ric instead. Stefan, he would have been dead if Ric didn't push him out of the way!" Maddie replies feeling frustrated by his behavior 

"don't you get it? he's not gonna stop until he gets what he wants-" Elena is cut of by Stefan who smiles slightly

"Elena stop talking I'm not giving Klaus anything"

"you asshole" Maddie yells moving forward and shoving her twin back angrily, he does not budge and instead stares down at her like he was bored and the girl backs away from him feeling disgusted by his gross inhumane behavior.

"Its not really my problem" Without hesitation, Elena slaps him across the face and grabs her friend's hand pulling her out of the basement quickly. Maddie looks behind her shoulder and glares at her brother once more before turning her back and walking out of the house where Damon stood with his arms crossed and his eyebrows furrowed in anger and disappointment. 

"let me talk to him" Damon reasons 

"you can't get in"

"here just take my car keys you go deal with your brother and we'll deal with ours" he nods watching as Elena walks away angrily.

"are you sure?" she asks 

"yep" he shrugs before taking a deep breath and vamp speeding into the house, he screams in pain as the sunlight hits his skin but moves quickly to make it down to the basement. Maddie jogs back down to where she had just left and finds Damon lying on the floor and Stefan sitting on a chair with his feet raised. 

"wow back already? the coffins aren't here so you guys can go away now" 

"I don't care about the coffins we need to talk"

"ok lets talk" Stefan shrugs, Maddie looks over at her raven-haired older brother and nods watching as he vamp speeds at the blonde and shoves him up the stairs. She quickly runs after them and through the house finding the two fighting in the front. Damon is able to kick Stefan to the ground and rips of a piece of the tree branch and shoves it straight into his stomach watching as he screams in pain. Maddie runs over to them and holds her hand over her mouth as she feels sick at the sight of her brother in so much pain. She hated doing all of this, she only wanted her brother back. 

"that is for screwing up my plan and for saving Klaus, and then you steal his family why?" 

"Klaus took everything from me, I'm doing the same" he chokes out

"why'd you screw it up?" Damon asks again twisting the wood deeper into his stomach

"I did it to save you" he says as he shoves him off and to the ground, Stefan sits up and pulls the wood out of his body and throws it to the side

"no way you didn't do this for me"

"he was one step ahead of us if Klaus died his hybrids would have killed you" 

"when are you gonna get it through your head stop saving me" Damon rebuttals shoving another piece of wood into their brother's stomach and stands to his feet before walking away to blow off a bit of steam and work the shocking revelation through his head. Maddie had chosen to stay and sat on the porch silently with her arms wrapped around her legs. Stefan had long recovered and leaned against the house, he had many things he wanted to say but it was like his mouth physically couldn't open. Neither spoke as the hours went by and the sun fell allowing darkness to take over. It wasn't until footsteps echo through the woods that the twins share a look and stand to their feet, they watch as Damon walks over to them seeming to have calmed down. 

"you know what I can't figure out? why save me was it brotherly love, guilt, switch on, switch off?"

"do you have somewhere to be?"

"deflection, that's not gonna work on me I invented that" Damon replies 

"we're done, can't you just go away?"

"not until you tell me why you saved me, you owe me that"

"I don't owe you anything"

"fine next question why'd you steal the coffins?" Damon asks 

"because Klaus's family is one weakness I could use against him"

"for what?" Maddie asks 

"you're not gonna kill him, there was only one way to kill him and you blew that to save me"

"you're wrong Damon, Klaus doesn't get to live forever. There's another way, there has to be" Stefan states 

"fair enough, whatever you're doing I want in"

"I don't need your help"

"last time I checked you were hiding out in a haunted house" Damon shrugs 

"no"

"come on brother"

"fine you want in? but its just me and you Elena and Maddie stay out of it" He says looking over at his sister who's eyes widen

"deal"

"Damon!" she says crossing her arms

"you're a liability Maddie, you care about Klaus" Stefan shrugs 

"Stefan-" before she can respond her twin reaches forward and forces her head against the tree behind her causing her to fall limp to the ground instantly. Damon stares at him in shock and leans down to her checking her pulse sighing as he sees that she was ok. 

"what the hell was that?"

"she would just be another added weakness" 

"she's our family Stefan"

"right now she's not, all we have now is taking down Klaus. nothing else matters"
